Trademe removes bank deposits as payment option……unreal
-
How will this work if you haven’t calculated the postage yet? Or is this just a way of forcing traders to use the trademe courier system? Forced behaviour. Forced tracking. Reduced options. Backwards move IMO.

Exactly !!!!!!,
Buyers still have to make a manual Bank deposit, Multi buyers whom have selected the cheapest shipping or no shipping at all still have to make a Manual deposit, same as cart for us small sellers who have to pay actual shipping etc. need to still ask buyers to pay correct shipping, no it does not work for all,
Yes, they cannot see the bigger picture at all, forcing ping is not going to keep members, the days of $1 reserves with no fees are gone?, because you will get stung with Ping fees, so no longer viable now, as Intrade, if buyer selecting shipping yes you had fees on $1 reserves?, it is a rort to say the least, So now 12+% fees on $1 reserves if Intrade with a 9.9% success fee,
I am at a point now getting rid of my bigger block stock, not worth it now on here, and the way I sell individual parts, cannot do same on Facebook, anyone who also appears to be a big business will have their Facebook accounts shut down, as has already happened to some, as it is for casual sellers not big businesses, Some found out the hard way, and big brother is watching those trying to avoid Tax on there too,
Trade Me have thrown all the good traders in with the bad eggs, we are not all the same,
Ping should automatically be added to sales over a certain value, low values just leave the bank deposit, feedback ratings should also come into it too on a Seller, poor selling feedback automatically add Ping, Good sellers let them be, I mean someone been here 20 odd years 20,000+ 100% feedback, why treat us like the Bad Eggs?, when we only ever used Bank deposit with no issues?, yes we are unfairly been treated, feedback speaks we are honest and fix any problems,

This is the last straw for me and I am in the process of editing all my listings to final listing. They have increased fees, filled the site with big businesses who drop ship items and make if hard to find your listings, upgrade the site where there are so many bugs that they are working on. Sending emails telling me to upgrade my listing as items are getting plenty of attention when they haven’t had a single view. If an item remains unsold you either aren’t given an option of FPO, can’t see who the watchers are ir make you offer below what your reserve is. TM has made a lot of money off me over the years but this is the final straw. I know there will be the big professional traders who will love this but this dictatorship to me as a small casual trader is enough. And before someone says it I will not let the door hit me on the arse as I’m leaving

It's a major problem with Ping users - so many don't list shipping.
With compulsory Ping it should be easy enough to only allow a listing with shipping charges listed ?

goodsound this is something I have been saying for years, no Shipping no ping,
so with forced Ping, they cannot list until they have added shipping, so where do you go now?,
as some have no idea how to work it out shipping until something is sold and know where it is going?,
But it is not rocket science to work it out for Standard sized courier bags an a 5Kg standard box etc.
although some out there are so hopeless, naive, or plain *#@!, they are still booking large parcels as small courier bags?,
Underpaying for courier, I received a box the other day via Aramex booked as a very small JQ courier Bag??, yes their other listings suggest they always do this,

Kia ora goodsound, thanks for the feedback, this is valid and I've passed it on to the team. We encourage sellers to add shipping to their listings. Buyers can use the Q&A to arrange shipping with the seller if the shipping they want isn't on the listing. Sellers can do a partial refund for shipping via ping, if a buyer ends up paying too much, combining shipping or collecting their purchase.
-9 -
Working out shipping ahead of time is a huge time waster to calculate for all regions and it also becomes instantly outdated whenever NZ Post or Aramex update their rates. Nobody wants to spend that much time updating the shipping for a low value item.

Michelle, I recently had a buyer who selected postage on each book that she had purchased. I asked her if she could please pay each postage amount using Ping, then I would immediately refund it so that I could get a refund of success fees charged on postage. She informed me that she would not do so and accused me of trying to rip her off. She insisted on paying by bank deposit - so how do you deal with a situation like that?
4 -
Michelle I don’t add shipping for some items because I don’t know the cost until it’s all boxed up and get a price from the post office (which is the only option for some smaller towns). It seems to me some enthusiastic shiny person didn’t think this through properly. I have always loved trademe but isnhas got progressively more difficult to navigate and this kind of forced change doesn’t go down well with a lot of older people who are probably the majority of trademe users. I hope you reconsider. It’s really not trademes business how the two traders organise payment, until it is???🧐🤨🤔

Anyone else that didn't get an Ping payments TM email? I sold 4 items in the 2 weeks of free listing. I got the Ping Payment emails the first week but not the 2nd week!
Also only the first 2 were loaded onto the Pass The Parcel site. It's a pain having to copy & paste the address & then having to & find the name of the buyer which isn't with address!

Situations like that won't happen anymore shortsbrandy so the question is moot. Now that Ping is mandated on everything a buyer can't refuse and insist on paying with Bank Deposit. Technically that won't be a valid option for them.

Forced to use Ping for TM to take a cut. And if you write in the main body of the listing to pay via Internet banking & not ping, will you be turfed ?

Kia Ora aquarian4442,
If this is found in listings staff have been contacting In-Trade Members to request it's removed before further action is taken, it will become site policy for Casual Sellers from 10 March 2026. - Cheers.

Before further action is taken? Seriously? If I treated my customers in my day job like this, pretty soon I would have no business. Whatever the REAL reason or this change, dressing it up as “for our safety” is an interesting “strategy”.
I fail to see how using bank deposits raises the risks of being scammed. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if it ain’t broken why “fix” it?

What if buyers don't have a credit card and not in your area to pay cash for pick up?
9 -
Callum Community Superuser
I would think the number of people who don't have a debit or credit card these days would be pretty miniscule AJ. But if they do exist then I guess they can't buy the item unless they arrange another method of payment directly with the seller.

lakeview3 There have been many instances (some reported in mainstream media) where accounts on here have been hacked, then the scammer uses that account to sell something. Payment was by bank transfer. Buyer pays to the scammer. Don't get their item, and can't get their money back.
With Ping payments that can't happen. Well it can, but Trade Me cover the buyer so they are not out of pocket.

A simple way for Trademe to minimise the bank transfer bypass listing cash as an option loophole, where it seems every man and his dog (sorry, no disrespect intended to the dog), is saying in their listings, that if you want to pay by bank deposit, choose the cash option, would be.. IF the seller allows pickup THEN cash is a selectable payment option ELSE do not allow cash as an option. Maybe that's too simple.

Re advising bank details in auction description, there is at least one in-trade member who states in all his auctions that he will immediately refund your PING payment and you will be sent his bank details. This seems a robust single finger approach towards Trademe policy! I pointed this out to TM but they took no action, no doubt due to his massive turn over
4 -
avantbiker, Why would Trademe do anything about it. If the money has been paid via ping, then refunded, it has been through the ping system and Trademe have got their cut.
1 -
Callum Community Superuser
50bmg. Nope. If a Ping payment is refunded, the fee is automatically refunded to the seller as well. So no, TradeMe don't get their cut.
I wonder what that sellers feedback is like.......
I wouldn't be happy if I bought and paid with Ping to be told they won't accept it.
1 -
50bmg. Um, no. If you issue a full refund, then Trademe gets nothing beyond having the money wander into their system and the exact same amount leave the same day. The act of issuing a PING refund also reverses the appropriate fee charge on your account.
1 -
callum. Hard to tell if more negative feedback due to his new T&C which are to the point...
"Please Note: I do not accept Payment by Ping If you pay by Ping I will immediately refund you and send account details for Payment Thank you for your understanding
....
PAYMENT BY BANK DEPOSIT ONLY."

flossy63 Community SuperuserYou can raise a fraud case with your bank in these instances, where an account has been hacked,as that account can be traced that has been used to scam etc. people need to realize this and not just a write it off,as person who paid will have all the details of account name used etc. and bank will also facilitate with Trade Me,2

So as a casual seller, you list an item for $1 reserve and it sells for $1. Buyer pays by ping, pays no service fee, but seller pays commission?
Will it mean the end of $1 reserve auctions?6 -
I have been with TM for years and never once have I had a problem with a bank account. This is just a way to extort more fee's in the disguise of "safety". Over the last five years or so TM has changed and not for the better, they can't fix the bugs which make selling difficult eg: We can't see watchers, can't make FPO on items. Sadly this is it for me and I'm sure many others will say goodbye too. This used to be a wonderful site, I still have my signed TM novel from 2007...how things have changed. Whoever decided this was a good idea needs their head read.

aquarian4442 - seller pays the 2.19% ping fee - 0.019c plus the ping on the shipping. If an item sells for $1, then the seller is worse off but Im guessing most people hope and get more than $1
littlemissy1 - did you miss the part where trademe is remving the success fees? In most cases, you will be better off and trademe actually worst off with their collection of fees

Is what TradeMe doing by removing bank transfers - legal? They are removing a valid and legal way for people to go about buying and selling goods. Ping transfers, so why can't buyers?
Sometimes, you get your money quicker by bank transfer (and yes, sellers who are aware, make sure the money stays in the account before sending any item). This sounds like TradeMe saying there is a problem, people react, here is a solution. All they are doing is creating a middle man to make money.
This used to be a great site to buy and sell second hand goods - you know, reduce and recycle, one mans junk, another mans treasure - but now it's full of "new" stuff.

aquarian4442 The fee on $1 is 2c. Hardly a deal breaker. Even if you add shipping of say $5.40 then the fee is 14c. You can always add 20c on to your shipping prices if you are consistently selling items for $1 with shipping.
littlemissy1 With this new system you pay LESS fees. There are no success fees now. You only pay the 2.19% Ping fee. So it's a win for sellers. Buyers on the other hand...... By the way I thought FPO had been fixed?
