When Rural Addresses Don't Have "RD"
AnsweredKia ora
There are numerous places in Aotearoa NZ that do not have RD in their addresses yet are meant to pay the RD Postage Surcharge. The problem is that many of these people do not, and they still insist they are not rural - which may geographically be true - when approached to top up their shipping.
An example is Raglan: "Raglan is considered rural for postage purposes in New Zealand because it is outside the regularly serviced urban areas and may require a rural delivery ticket for parcel delivery. This is due to its geographical location and the way New Zealand Post categorizes addresses". I've never had a person from Raglan include the rural surcharge, always insisting 'we are not rural'. I know this problem is endemic and most traders go 'Whatever, not worth a fight' and move on.
The same has been noted in some parts of Waiheke Island and some parts of Coromandel. And other random places a Trader can't imagine are rural until they book a courier.
The issue is - How can TradeMe encourage people to be HONEST in selecting 'Rural delivery'?
Wonder how many others have seen this issue in their travels!

I have encountered this. I have on my auctions that I go by the NZ Post maps as to whether people are rural or not.
I give the buyer the option of sending the item to a Non Rural location.
If buyer still insists they are not rural and refuse to pay extra postage I just cancel the trade.

Use this Address check, it tells you which service is rural and Urban for addresses,
https://www.addresscheck.co.nz/
another thing to note is the post code, if the third Digit is a 7, 8 or 9, it usually denotes it is rural, something you can spot straight off, example 2682, 8 denotes it is rural,
but this is why I alway's check addresses before confirming combined shipping, it will pick up being rural so can give a rural quote, as yes they do try and hide it, back in the days of untracked post bags, they think you would just throw stuff in a bag write address on and put it in drop box and not go to counter, one such member told me to do just that years ago, because I picked up rural address, but no I did not do it, they had to pay correct shipping as I was booking online,
These days with online booking, they can no longer hide the fact, as it will give you rural rates,

Andrew, you are wrong about Raglan. Are you basing your statement on Aramex or something? Of my last dozen or so sales to Raglan using NZPost only 1 was an RD address. The rest were standard addresses. No RD surcharge needed.

When the supplied address (Raglan 3225) is put in the address finder we find for TM's default carrier:
"Rural Ticket Required - Out of Normal Delivery Area- This address is outside the couriers Normal Delivery Area".
This is emphatically not a purchaser's fault. This fact indicates inconsistencies in the system and also the continued need to remind Raglan people (for example, and again no shame on these people) to play the rural surcharge or the full courierpost charge, which will still be greater than the rural option. They should be able to select the appropriate shipping rate without being promted by a seller.

Andrew. That is with Aramex. NOT NZPost. No address in Raglan with the post code 3225 is Rural Delivery with NZpost.
While I don't use Book a courier. I did a trial booking to an address in Raglan. Bow street, with a postcode of 3225. It is not classed as RD. See attached.

flossy63 Community SuperuserI have had Raglan addresses postal code 3225, and they were Standard Delivery with NZ Post, Only Rural with Aramex, Did you try the address checker above?, as they will tell you, as my screen shot below shows, I have had no problem booking Raglan as urban with NZ Post, 3225 post code is both urban & Rural, actual address will tell you Urban or Rural, as a road near me, part of Road is Urban rest of Road is Rural as it heads out of town,

We are just members like you, but have been on Trade Me for many years, I have been on here for 20 years, we are here to help, but do not have all the answers, we can only comment from our own experiences and knowledge, I am in no way gaslighting,
If you use the Address checker, as in post above https://www.addresscheck.co.nz/, If it says the address you have been provided is Rural, Give screen shot to your Buyer,
If they do not want to pay for Rural they need to provide an urban address,
Also using the Trade Me book a courier, Manually typing the address in can give different results, as some times it is the format the buyer sends their address, as I have found this myself,

Of all my trades, Ive only had 1 trader that argued black and blue that they werent rural. I sent them the outcome of the rural checker website mentioned above and they still didnt agree. So I just gave them the choice of choosing a different address that was non rural, pay the rd fee or i cancel the trade. They eventually gave me a non rural address.
Now - this is my experience. im just telling you my experience. Its just different from you
I've been on the community forum for years and Callum and flossy63 have helped me with great advice, as they have many others.

Trade Me staff - Community team
Kia ora Everyone, there is excellent advice in this post from flossy63 and Callum that will benefit members in the future. I have made some edits (as you'll see), both to keep things in line with our Community Guidelines and to ensure the comments make sense.
Andrew if you are having difficulty with a particular member, the team can give you a hand. You can request to "talk to a person" via chat (blue bubble toward the bottom right of the screen) and someone will help you.0 -
S Community SuperuserKia Ora Andrew,Sorry to read of your experience,Try putting the RD Address Check Link in your descriptions, above the shipping options & politely ask Members to check their address so correct shipping fees are paid the first time, avoiding delivery delays.&/Or try putting your Rural address at the Top of your shipping details, Highest charge first to lowest - if you are able to. - Members stop to read the shipping fee correctly.Neither may work for you though then again they just might & even if it slows the frequency down some what for you. - All the Best.0

Couriers do not deliver to Rural, they merely drop items off at the local Post Office and a contracted Postal Delivery person with a van delivers those items, groceries, bread and milk and standard mail.
We laughed during lockdowns at some of the silliness going on and the interpretation of Working Remotely and Home delivery of Groceries because that's what Grass roots Kiwis living in rural areas have done for years.
Whilst some places are geographically in RURAL New Zealand they don't all have a RURAL DELIVERY additional charge.
The Postal Service in this country has become so messed up by those calling the shots and those working in it who have not learnt about why the Postal System was set up in the way it was, including with Postage Stamps to learn Geography and circular economy.

Some Couriers do deliver Rural, where NZ Post is Rural, Aramex can Urban, I had one such address only a couple of weeks ago, and yes RD was in the address, and over the years I have had a few like that,
