Untouched Abandoned Storage Units-Reallly?
AnsweredHey Community, just had another experience where the companies sell their abandoned storage unit contents.
They take their photos, list the ad and then promote, as is where is, they are not responsible for anything in there, This unit was abandoned by the owner etc etc....
However, if I'm bidding on a listing, I'd expect it to look just like the images when I arrive and the door opens up.(like bidding on a lemon and they send you a tomato)
Click click, immediate photos Dad take and guess what? This 1 company says they never touch anything....
HUGE difference with their ad images to when we arrive.
Wait, it gets better, he even mentions, there are no power tools in here??
Now let's clarify a little, my dad and sister picked up and Dad did say it looks cleaner than the photos he last saw, when I was bidding on it.(Dad doesn't know the gyst of things, he's the muscles, wink wink)
We just spent over 1k for this and you've already been through it, items removed and moved.
Now what Guys? What would you do?

Is that the seller who states on their listings that they aren't liable for any variations between the description & photos and what you actually get after you've purchased?
I certainly wouldn't buy anything from a company that has such a wide ranging disclaimer in their listings. I would also be surprised if it is permissible under Trade Me's terms and conditions to sell you something which could be completely different to what they describe and show.
I would report it to Trade Me and see what they say.

Hi Aubs. Yes, as David says the item for sale has to match the description. The photos form part of that description. If you can show items that were in the original photo that were not there when you collected it then you have good grounds for getting the purchase refunded. Should that be what you want to do.

Thank you both. Yes definitely keeping away from those wording ones.
Their wording stated in the ad:
"Unit sold as is with items as seen. Assets are assumed to be used; all descriptions & photos should be used as a guide only and we accept no liability for the condition of the items within the unit. All sales are final."
The images Dad had taken, some items are missing and moved.
What got Dads attention was the guy said there were no hand power tools.I'm more than happy to take it further, it's unfair.
Not only our hard earned dollars, but to knowingly make false claims and try to justify it, there's always one.
By the way, this is also a large company where there is that 1 person, I'm sure who just cannot get away with it this time, sadly...
Thank you for your help, looking forward to future Trademe selling and purchases. If there's an outcome, will be sure to post it! Have a great weekend!0 -
If they don't go through the unit - how do they know its not full of restricted or banned items? If they are not checking the unit first, then they could be selling Firearms, NAZI memorabilia, poisons, untested/unsafe electrical and gas appliances, etc. that is shockingly irresponsible on their part.
If they are going through the unit and cleaning them out, then they need to take photos after they are done, so you are bidding on what you see.
This just sounds like a dumb business model that is going to end in red face feedback's and account suspension.

Kia Ora Aubs,
That's shocking and Simon has made very valid points also!
Have you filed a Dispute Resolution with TradeMe? - ensure to add your before and after photo's and correspondence with this Member.
If this Member has further like Listings I would advise reporting them via TM's "Live Chat" facility for direct assistance then & there to prevent further Sales going ahead and other Members being caught up with like Trades.
Select the Contact us Link at the bottom of any TM page, give the landing page a count of 15+ seconds for the Chat Tab to Pop up in blue at the bottom right of your screen, there is a slight delay in this appearing.
Enter in the Chat bot which comes up once the Chat icon is selected - Talk to person - you will be taken to entering your details before arriving at the window to Chat with a Real Person/Staff.The manned hours weekdays are 9:30:am - 5:00pm and weekends 9:30am - 4:pmAll the Best - Cheers.1 -

Thanks David,
That's true and exactly what they should state, or as you point out, take the photos after going through it and not during the auction or before collection time.
Much appreciated

I bought one, the seller is in takaniniand list as selling on behalf and states their units are private. The unit description was a misrepresentation and the goods had clearly been pre-selected and items removed from packaging. It's a shame we live in a society stacked full of thieves, who steal like rats in the night. Id have at least a bit of respect if they manned up and tried to take the stuff off me. You know who you are.
