How a common scam on here at the moment plays out.
FeaturedI have noticed an increase in posts lately, and have been targeted myself, by a type of phishing scam that is prevalent at present on Trade Me. This post is just to give people an idea what it looks like so they can be warned. Everything is fairly professional looking at a glance over. English and grammar OK. Trade Me images and links clear and looking good. My item sold at 11:47am. Trade Me emailed me a warning at 12:54pm. So fairly fast reaction from Trade Me.
Someone buys your item with buynow. You will get the standard genuine item sold email from Trade Me, and also a scam email. The "buyer" might also leave you feedback or ask questions on your other listings urging you to read and comply with an email they will send you "via Trade Me."
This is what the first scam email you receive looks like. Obviously I have added the big blue SCAM

Hi Garry. Yes, I had shares in Trade Me. They did very well too. Then they were all bought out in the takeover in 2019. There has been some suggestion that Apex Partners would sell Trade Me and it will become a publicly listed company again. I would probably buy again if that happened.
Your freedom of choice has not been removed. Nor is it false information. If you don't want something on your watchlist any longer, then remove it.
Yes, the 25 views does seem incongruous, but perhaps it wold look even stranger if there were 25 watchers, and no views.

A "get funds" link in a notification of payment from trademe should be a red flag to most people, as im not aware of any trademe emails or notifications which offer you any links to click on to go to your banks login page. Be sensible people, if you want to do something with your bank account, always open a fresh browser window and type the banks address (ie kiwibank.co.nz, anz.co.nz, bnz.co.nz etc) into the address bar yourself. Type the entire address and then find the internet banking link on the banks main landing page.
Don't ever log into your bank by clicking on a link or a button in an email or message, or on any website - except the banks site which you reached by typing in their address as above.

Hi how do we report a scammer profile to trademe?

Hello Nicole. If it's a seller that has active listings you can use the Community Watch button at the bottom of the auction page. If they don't have any listings currently you can use the Contact Us link at the bottom of any page and report them through to Trade Me that way.

buyer won listing! buyer had 500+ feedback
then emailed to ask for bank account details and demanded tracking. ( i could not match email or name to the listing won) as soon as i told them they had to send address via trade me and why. trade me where caught out and trade me sent a email pinnishing scam and they have been removed from trade me. then the email said it was there dads account. yet there account was removed i could still leave negative feedback.
i feel this is more like my listings are being controlled by a small group of criminals.

This notification above is a scam. It took me to my bank account, and I was just about to enter my bank details.

I filed a dispute as I was scammed on the 10th of September and was told it would be 4 weeks to hear back. Its now been 5 weeks. How long will this take?

Hello Nadine. Yes, the disputes process does take quite a while to wind through the system. I have a basic flowchart here that will help you get some idea where it could be at. You may need to scroll down

The Disputes Tribunal has found in favour of a buyer, and required Trade Me to reimburse them $4900 after buying an item from a compromised account:

Unfortunately Mike, you are not helping you case here. This a publicly viewable forum, not a contact trademe system by posting your email address in multiple identical posts you are again making it easier for scammers to access you account and details. Click the icon to the right of your posts and either delete or edit to remove your email address. To contact Trademe, use the contact us link at the bottom of any page here.

We sold our expensive handbag 5 days ago, we booked a courier using trademe the parcel was collected and delivered to the buyer, we received positive feedback and then trademe asked for me to verify my identity. I did this and we have been brick walled since despite many emails, it says that the money is in our ping acc however it now also says we have not sold anything! We explained that we only offered the bag for half of our asking price because there was something on marketplace we wanted to buy however thats now sold and we missed out. I will upload a screenshot showing that it states no sales no listings but has the money in ping for our listing we sold. The money says its available but we cant withdraw it into our chosen bank acc? Is this a scam?

Hello quality1996
No this is not a scam. This is fairly common especially if this was your first Ping sale.
Your money is safe. It is just being held until Trade Me gets around to assessing your Identity Verification.
If you can refrain from sending further emails it might help, as that might just bump you down the list again.

That does not make no sense at all to me, if i email to try get a response i might be put to the bottom of the list? I was told on Sunday that they aim to call me that day, how ever its now Tuesday. Its my 2nd ping sale not the first and why would it say i've had no sales no listings when i have? Its clear i have but for some reason its suddenly saying i have no sold items or listings. I have listings up right now, and still able to list items up so this is all messed up to me. Why was i not asked to do these verification's apon signing up, You said its fairly common especially if it was my first ping sale, you only accept ping sales!

Hello again quality1996.
I am just a Trade Me member like you. Not Trade Me staff.
There are many posts currently with people in the same boat.
Is it good enough that you have to wait so long for verification? No, it's not. But it is what it is. About all you can do is wait until Trade Me contact you back. In the meantime, just know that your money hasn't disappeared. As long as you have the Ping confirmation there, and Trade Me emailed you to confirm you can send the item, The money is yours, it is safe, and you are not a victim of a scam.

Kia Ora quaility1996,
Confirming this isn't a scam, your account records the legitimate transaction which has taken place and shows you have further listings running which are all interactable. - You're awaiting the verification to be assessed and passed by a staff member. - The brand of your sold handbag is susceptible to a high level of knock offs being sold hence the possible flag for an ID check.
The company is currently upgrading their system onto a new platform - If you go to the very bottom of that screenshot page and select the word Mobile your My Trade Me account should show the Sold items and Listings in the Left hand side banner menu.
