NEW CHANGES: Stopping Bank Transfers & Only Allowing PING or AFTERPAY or CASH
I just want to clarify something as there seems to be a contradiction. The changes mean no more success fees (great). But when you sell, you can only use Ping, Afterpay & Cash. The reason is stated to protect Users as 90% of scams use Bank Transfers. And, Buyers Protection is raising from $2500 to $5000. But Buyers Protection states whats covered and whats not covered (see link below). It states that Fraud is not covered by Buyers Protection. So what happens if someone uses a stolen credit card, the money goes to PING, the seller sends the item, and the seller is paid. Then later the charge is reversed when the card is reported stolen. ARE TM GOING TO ABSORB THE FRAUDULANT COST? Then what if the money goes to PING, the seller sends the item & the stolen credit card charge is reversed before the seller gets paid. DOES THAT MEAN BP DOES NOT COVER THE SELLER & THE FRADULANT BUYER GETS THE ITEM? It appears in that scenario PING is ineffective? If the fraudulant buyer uses Afterpay buy lots of items and defaults on payment, is the item held until 8 weeks later until the item is paid off or sent straight away? WHAT HAPPENS IF AFTERPAY IS USED, THE ITEM IS SENT, AND THE BUYER DEFAULTS ON AFTERPAY? Thats just two scenarios. I heard that Layby went bust because so many people defaulted? I dont know how scammers do frauds but thats just two instances I could think of. As an honest Seller (and buyer) I dont release an item until money is in the bank. Its simple. It 'appears' both PING & AFTERPAY are still vunerable to scammers. Can you please answer these questions? I dont have experience using PING or AFTERPAY as a seller as im a casual seller. But if I am forced to use it as a seller, I would like to know what happens in these scenarios please? Am I really protected by using PING & BP? Id never use Afterpay as a seller as Id have to send the item, wait 8wks for payment & no recourse if they default.

Callum - it works like that for me too. I had mine turn up at 4.17pm today - so i must have slight priority over you (lol)

Yeah cos it's so cool to wait a whole day rather than an hour or two.
You're trying hard to sell it, but either way you look at it Ping is a rubbish platform for a casual seller.
I'd rather pay a success fee any day!

I get a same day Ping payment transfer on both my in-trade and casual Trade Me accounts using different bank accounts. Are any of you "takes a few days" people are willing to prove it?
Yes, I had shares in Trade Me. Did very well out of them too. There is talk of it becoming a public company again. Not sure if I will invest again if they do re-list. I'd have to crunch the financials, but would seriously consider it.

Not always true on both accounts jpicard, if you look at my past posts you will see I dont always agree with Callum and I dont always support trademe. I didn't want to use PING for a few reasons but since being forced realised its not as bad as what I had first thought. It was the same with using myproducts, but sometimes experience speaks for itself and i wonder why I didnt start using it years before I did. It has shelted me from the "new upgraded site" debarcle. Superusers are only community related so I dont think they also relate to the trademe market place. And clearly you didnt get the joke i was making with Callum - is if trademe gives me priority over him because I got mine 1 minute before him.

That you get your funds quickly is a moot point Callum.
It's what happens for me that is important.
Out of my 3 sales yesterday, I've been paid for one thus far.
The time between the sale / Ping payment and transfer to my bank- referenced as a Trade Me direct debit - nearly 24 hours, in fact it was 14 minutes shy of 24 hours.
If this were a bank transfer, the time would have been maximum 2 hours. THAT IS THE PROBLEM.
Yes I could take screenshots, but it's not my job to 'prove' to you. My word that this is happening is adequate.

Something has just changed? was there an upgrade? or has TM done something to address the transfer out issue? the last 3 pings payment and the transfers out have appeared in my bank within 4hours, excellent and about time ! maybe the community page has sparked tm into doing something. it makes a huge difference getting access to our money sooner.

Good to hear transfers are happening fast for you jpicard
Wish I could say the same is happening for me. Made a small sale yesterday around 3.30pm and I'm still waiting.
It really does stuff up the flow of things having to wait so long ...

Bank transfer !! I bought something yesterday and Paid via sellers bank account. I was surprised !! Today I tried to reload MY bank deets onto my site but can’t . Why Not ?? Sellers/clents ( yes we ARE TM’s clients) should have ALL options not just TradeMe's 'private bank' = ping. It’s BS that ping is safer than bank transfer, sellers don't post the goods until payment is made - simple. How can I re load my bank details.

Yes, this enforced Ping is a sham, been here 21 years, well over 22,000 trades, 100% positive feedback, only offered Bank deposit?, No disputes filed against me except a false non delivery, where buyer admitted they did have parcel after doing a inquiry with courier,
Why are we getting treated with disrespect and thrown in same basket as the bad eggs,
What is the problem?, no respect to loyal long time members anymore,
a lot of my customers will not use ping or cannot as institutions like schools Kindy's etc. where 2 people must sign off a bank deposit, Yes, Trade Me is killing us little people,

manna7 It's about BUYER protection.
If you buy something from a seller, put the money into their account and they run off with it what can you do? Not a lot. You’ve probably lost it for good unless you want to try your luck with the Police or the Disputes Tribunal.
If you pay by Ping and the seller runs off with it, your money can be easily returned to you.

I've just been reading through this thread and as far as I can see, no one has mentioned the problem I have with the changes.
If I use Buy Now for a lot of small items from the same seller, which I do often, there is no way to combine them using Ping. Luckily most of the things I get have an auction start price, so I bid and when they are all finished I can get the seller's bank details and transfer the total.
I tend to avoid Buy Now if possible because I don't want a whole string of small transactions in my bank account.
I'm rebuilding my entertainment library so buy a lot of $1 and $2 items.

I think the biggest problem is that a lot of sellers don't list shipping but have mentioned that they can ship ok. then when we win the auction they want to be paid by bank transfer for shipping, the problem with that is trademe don't offer any insurance or protection for these payments anymore and if there is a problem with delivery or the seller doesn't ship and says they have then trademe will not help us. they step aside. trademe only offer protection for shipping if its included in the listing details.

But in a case like that, TM would still cover the cost of the auction surely? Losing the shipping cost would be minimal if you got back what you had paid through Ping.

yes they would cover the item cost but you would loose the shipping costs as tm do not allow bank transfers any more and offer zero protection with any bank transfer. if you brought a large item that cost $100 for shipping paid with bank transfer and there was an issues with not receiving it and the seller says he has sent it tm will NOT help at all or even investigate. they do not allow bank transfer, they only protect shipping if its part of the ping payment.

Kia ora jpicard, the Disputes team assess disputes on a case by case basis and may take shipping into account when looking at a dispute. As part of the changes to the site we are also looking at shipping options.

Michelle - are they also looking into the option of combining "won" auction amounts into one Ping payment?
For example, I have previously won 10 auctions from the same seller for $1 each. I don't want to make 10 payments through Ping. Luckily for me this seller takes bank transfers, which solves the problem.
I do really like Ping but not for this situation. I regularly win multple small auctions from various sellers and would definitely use Ping if the option to combine them was available.

Hello jan.
Yes, combining multiple wins via auction, when you are not sure if you will win or not, has always been tricky. I don't think there is a clean solution really. The only way around it would be to allow the seller to alter shipping costs post sale. Perhaps not really a path Trade Me want to go down. Understandably.
If the seller has a $0.00 combined option you select shipping on one when you make your bid, and $0 on the rest. That's a problem if you don't win the the one you put shipping on of course.
Second way is to pay for shipping for everything then ask the seller to refund the overpayment. That's often how I sort it with my buyers. Again not ideal, but it is is quick and easy with Ping.

Wouldn't it have made sense to have worked all of this stuff out before imposing Ping?

flossy63 Community SuperuserYou can do this if the sellers have "CART" offered,I personally stopped Buy Now's so no cart, as it was enforced on us with the enforcement of Ping, and it cannot be removed,as when people buy 15+ items with cart and in Sold items in My Products, no tick boxes to tick individual items off when you pick them, so was wasting so much of my time checking and rechecking I have every item, as because of where they are stored I cannot pick items in order they are won on list, that wastes even more time, moving bins around then having to go back to a bin I have just been in, re stack them etc.and in my Products Sold in cart when you go to book courier too much scrolling as they have a solid list of all shipping auctions off every auction showing?, so literally scrolling down pages etc?.So now, they can either pay individually via Ping or I can give them 1 Total to pay via Bank deposit when I confirm the combined shipping after I have packed, Also problem with ping, they pay and no communication, no idea if the have finished buying etc. on multiple buys?, do I pack and send now?, do not ask for combine shipping, just think everything can be sent for $6.00?, Yes all conditions on auctions just ignored, yet later find they have bids on others, so then obvious they have not finished, but days later still no contact?, I have had some use cart, but then bid on others or use buy now later, no contact,Did not have this issue as much at all before Enforced Ping & Cart. now it's a dogs dinner, use cart for 10 + items, then buy & bid on more?,Cart is more for the big Business sellers whom can set a flat shipping rate, same as the Warehouse Online, it is ok, for just a few items, but a nightmare for anything over 10 - 15 items for us little stay at home Intrade Sellers,1

Think I'm being gagged from this discussion as I've posted twice now yet they are invisible - perhaps freedom of speech isn't welcome?
I have found more than half the people buying from me are chosing to do a bank transfer.
It seems to be preferred and easier, but I wonder if TM will find a way to put a stop to it.
Ping is not a user friendly platform.

Hello retrocentric. No, some posts are automatically put into pending mode. This is largely due to keywords triggering the 'bots. I have 3-4 like this today. They will clear eventually

Yes I do use the cart if the auction has the same bid and "buy now" price, but most of what I buy are auctions for $1 with a buy now of $3. So I bid and nearly always get them for a dollar. When the auctions end there is no way to pay for them together with Ping.

Yes, a lot of my customers prefer bank deposit, my regulars still prefer to pay via bank deposit,
Some out there do not have credit cards, some cannot use ping as Institutions, Schools Kindy's, Toy libraries etc. whom need 2 people to sign off a bank deposit, Ping is not for all,
and my feedback says I am not a risk where they are likely to be ripped off,
as some one said in a past thread, Trade Me are putting peoples lives at risk, which is true if some take their blinkers off, to see the bigger picture outside there box, and the damage all these changes are doing, they are destroying small businesses etc. they are destroying the site, they are not fixing things they are causing more damage and harm,

They certainly have made it difficult for traders like you. It's a shame TM have such a monopoly.
1 -
buyers are not protected by trademe when they use bank transfers anymore that's why trademe banned bank transfers on there site there were to many scammers and issues with it.

jpicard
It should be our choice though. It's always been understood that bank transfers are not protected and I agree that TM shouldn't be expected to reimburse in those cases. But the new system is making it difficult for buyers and sellers alike.

Thanks Callum, can't even remember what I said now but that's good to know!

flossy63 Community SuperuserBut some off us are not scammers and unlikely to ever be,
been here 21 years, well over 22,000 trades, 100% feedback, what does that tell you?,should we be treated like bad eggs?, thrown in the same basket?, just a sign of the times, just no respect for loyal long time members anymore,my feedback speaks, unlikely to scam, it should be buyers choice how they pay,0 -

I know what you mean. I joined TM in January 2001 and still have 100% feedback from both selling and buying.
