Bank Payment - Partial Match

Sorry, but I wouldn't deposit into a bank account with only a partial match. I can't understand why you just don't give them your full name. 

you are lucky my on line payments on the listing have disappeared as an option - ping is too expensive and not suitable for shipping combined  items

Did you just List or Relist that Listing today being the Ping promotion day or have they disappeared from an already Listed item?

Yvonne - because its good practice (in my opinion) for someone I don't know to have my bank account number and full name including middle. Its not needed to make the bank deposit and the buyer can check my feedback to know that Im not going to do they dirty. Especially for a very low value sale

I just don't have a problem with someone knowing the name of my bank account. I have done thousands of trades and never had an issue? Why is it a concern with you? 

Sorry, I didn't realize that you had your middle name on your account too - mine is just first and last name.

No all good. With full name it just gives people more info to do scamming or breaching my account/info, especially if they then want to pick something up, they also then have my address

Yes, when this system was implemented I don't think they had the average Trade Me seller at the top of their mind. It was more for people paying into accounts that they were told are financial institutions or banks, and turn out to be some Joe Bloggs mule.

Trade Me say if a buyer asks you for your bank details, then you should provide it. So I think Trade me would side with the buyer, not the seller. If the buyer left negative feedback that would be interesting. I feel you would have to wear that.

I think its quite reasonable for a buyer to both ask and expect the full account name.It is their money and they have a reasonable expectation it is safe. While ou mention your feedback, maybe account is hacked, or seller turned rouge suddenly. You mention a partial match, while it "may" give you a hint its correct, it maybe a family member collecting the money in disguise of the account owner. If thetrade turned bad for some reason and the member needed to take a legal remedy, the proper account name would be needed as part of the process.

In short the banks have put in situ the account and name matching to prevent fraud, with you trying to not comply with it is likely to send up red flags to a buyer.

I belive you should comply providing the full name of the account

Callum - thanks for these statements. However, they dont state that full name details should be provided, just to either provide or check/confirm bank account details. And actually this is what most people do, and I confirm the details are correct. So I think I am complying with those statements.

Donal - I am often receiving feedback on a daily basis, the buyer will often see feedback on the day they are making the payment. Yes I agree that this is not 100% full proof, but combined with a partial match it should be enough. If there is dispute, trademe will provide them with my full details anyway to lodge a claim.

I have same Payment Instructions for over 20 years, Initials only, I will not put my full name in them,

as Trade Me have tried to make us do via E-Mail, No, bank on several occasions said no we do not have to give our full name Initials are sufficient, Giving your full name is opening you up to scams, especially those that have Phone number and addresses etc. in their Auto payment Instructions, I cringe when I see auto payments with all that info, all those details together can be used by others, As yes there are new accounts using buy now's to get auto payment instructions looking for details, and you never hear from them, one was a 50c item, wanting pickup? over 3 hours round trip from their location, immediately said scam, contacted Trade Me, accounts went poof, too easy to create a new account now and only have to pay $1 to authenticate?, needs to go back to $10 minimum, 

My Phone number is private it does not get given out, all my Trade Me communication is via E-Mail only, and I have stopped pick ups, so no need to give address out either,

People need to think about giving out too many details and Information, 

A Partial match is ok with just initials, it means the name does match, but is not a full match, 

and if you have a long history with good feedback, very unlikely you would try scamming people, Buyers need to make their own judgement to continue or not, But a partial match with Initials only is enough to continue, out of hundreds of Trades, I have had only 2 query, but once you explain to them that initials give a partial match, it is safe to continue,  

Just to add, my name is blacked out on senders details for my courier parcels, as is phone number and Street number, if booked online couriers have all that info if there is a problem, even your E-Mail address, which has been proven in the past, as they need to contact me, 

Yes, those that get your full name can hunt you down on facebook too!, what the heck, yes it has happened in the past, Trade Me member, bad seller that received bad feedback, I had to file a police report as he and his friends were stalking, the E-Mail he sent said it all, and he messaged many friends, but 2 of them were in the police Lol!, So people just be careful what information you give out these days, too many scams happening, peoples E-Mails get hacked with your info, yes I was a Victim of someones E-Mail being hacked years ago when Xtra got hacked, it all led back to Trade Me member I had dealt with as their name was used, but not the E-Mail address it was foreign,

K - no I havent checked it but I have made some payments with only first and last name and it stated partial match. But thanks for your suggestion, I will definitely test it and see what it states.

Flossy63 - thanks, Im glad someone has the same cautionary approach as I do. And likewise when I explain with the partial match is ok and safe to continue, that has always work - except for this one time.

Its now been 4 days since the buyer has contacted me, so I have contacted trademe for my fees to be refunded and will just relist and move on if this doesnt prompt a payment. Fingers crossed I dont get any negative feedback

 Ask your buyer if they are using an app?, if they are, suggest to try on an actual website, as some times it is the the apps,

I have this on my payment instructions now, "please use website if you have issues",

As those that have gone & used the website then have no problem and payment goes through, you never hear from them again, and money is in account,

Just an update, I didnt hear bank from the buyer - even after giving my first name so applied for my fees back. Just today they have now placed negative feedback on me for failing to provide full details and stating I must have something to hide.

File a dispute, a partial match is a match with just Initials & we are within our rights not to disclose our full names, Initials and surname is just fine, and banks will back you up on that too, they keep saying we do not have to give our full spelt out name, as we could be opening ourselves up for scams,

Your buyer will need to get to grips with this, otherwise as a buyer they will keep not paying & mucking other sellers around, One day they will wake up to this, maybe after they receive Negatives for non completion of trades and failing to make payment, as for years previously no one had issues paying to accounts with just initials and sometimes no names at all?, or Trade Me names that would not match? They were giving all bank details that were required, They failed to complete the trade, 

Thanks again for your advice flossy63. I will definitely do that and hopefully trademe will delete it. I know they dont often do, but this is clearly against their policy so hopefully they will. I was hoping we could just agree to move on

Seller failed to provide correct full bank details.

I tend to agree that a partial match SHOULD be enough. But people are getting more and more aware (perhaps even paranoid) of the scams out there. This is generally a good thing. People are increasingly wanting 100% confirmation that they are trading safely. A full name match gives them that peace of mind. 

Old accounts with good feedback isn't enough any more unfortunately. There was a often talked about scammer on here that hacked 100% long term feedback accounts and attempted to sell music instruments. 

I really feel that if you don't want to provide full name then you would at the least need to offer Ping as an alternative for those extra cautious buyers. It seems AJ doesn't. 

I have put in the dispute report. I went back to them again to ask if they have tried my first name and last name and what did that come up with. They actually responded but said they didn't and also said they didn't want to pursue the trade anymore.
This is all fine but just don't know why people can't see both sides and move on amicably. I mean really what's harm done. I could get all grumpy about the person not paying but understand their worry and happy to just move on. They have never considered my position.
Trademes response will be interesting. I've given all but my middle name so that should be enough to make payment.
This is the only person to have done this so I don't think my payment details are enough. Also, ive received positive feedback all along so i dont think the hacking my account issue is a factor here.

No i don't want to use PING. I'm considering whether to open another bank account with just first and last name if that's possible. But will see if i have anyone else with this issue

Good news. Trademe has deleted the feedback so i feel vindicated.

As I understand from my experience, the "actual" name on the account needs to be correct.  I recently had to pay something in the high thousands and kept saying partial match.  I did not pay until I had the "account Name" and a full match. At the end of the day, the payer is going to be out of pocket if the payment goes up the creek.  Perhaps traders who want to keep anonymous need to open a new account only for Trade Me with a basic account name. 

I think that in these days of increasing scams it makes perfect sense. If the name doesn't match - do not proceed. 

I'm not sure a bank would let you open a (personal) account with anything other than your actual name Diana. Would be different for businesses of course. But the seller would possibly also have to register that business name over on the New Zealand Companies Register as well.

Yes, that is correct, as to why above, several times I have said, the Bank says I do not have to give my full name, Initials with Surname are fine, Initials give you a partial match, which means it is a match and what is provided matches the account, 

As I did enquire about opening another account using my Trade Me name etc. but it is a no go even connected to your current account, you have to open an account using your registered name, as for very obvious reasons,

So I will continue just giving my Initials & Surname, not my full name, which in the wrong hands to lead to be used fraudulently, I think my 20+ year trading history & feedback gives enough assurance I am not a scammer, 

and 20 years of using same payment instructions with same Initials and Surname? which no one in those 20 years has ever batted an eyelid?, Buyers need to get their heads around that Initials are sufficient, if they have a problem with it, it is their problem, not the sellers,
