Being charged twice for postage
Brought 2 auctions for very small items with rather expensive postage ($21 each) planning to combine the postage like they had offered another inquirer in a previous auction only to be told they wouldn't as "they are all packed in prepaid courier packages". The postage costed more then twice the auction price.

They must be pretty big items to need $21 courier packs, although you say they are small things? If they are indeed small it would never be a good idea to buy in the first place with such a high shipping price, although only you know the size as small is a subjective word. This highlights the need to ask questions before buying if it's not explicitly stated on the auction page. If someone was offering something that I could send for $6 but were charging $21, I would not buy. Will be interesting to hear how they were packed and what size once you receive them.
If the seller will not budge and you really don't want to spend that money, you could not pay and explain why. You may ger some negative feedback for not completing and not checking first, but up to you if you think it's worth it. If you do go ahead and find you have been way overcharged, you could raise a dispute with Trademe so at least they have it on record.

Kia Ora Brendon,
Shipping has become incredibly expensive, though as Gary-NZStocked has advised,
Unfortunately if the Listing didn't state Combined shipping & you hadn't asked pre purchase for this option you have entered a legal contract by purchasing at the terms of each individual auction listing, therefore individual shipping costs.
Most Sellers will combine shipping on multiple purchases though as there are the few who prepack, ensuring prompt sending to delivery once the item is won - it always pays to ask all questions prior to bidding and not to assume between contracts being formed in the Q&A section between other Members - Cheers.

I did ask about combined postage on the 2nd auction 2 days before ending and never got a reply it wasn't untill 5 mins after the auction ended and I messaged him saying I had sent the pay including shipping for combined postage that he then messaged back immediately saying that I had to pay individually. as for the sizes 1 would fit in a box 8x8x25cm with room the other 38x26cm

Brendon. According to NZPost a box 8cm x 8cm x25cm and up to 3kg would be $37 between islands. Within island depends on location, but $12 or less if closer.
You must certainly never assume that a seller combines post. However if they are saying they don't you must therefore expect to receive the item in 2 separate parcels.

Saying they don't after having said to another they do is contradictive and that still fits inside a $2 postage bag

Brendon - never assume - if you agreed to each listing without getting an answer first that falls back to you, you could just not complete the auction but likely to see a red for doing so
