Community Watch - How to Make a Great Report
PinnedWe want to make sure everyone using Trade Me has a great experience when they buy or sell. Community Watch is the best way to notify us if a listing isn’t quite right. We have a specialist team who review the reports, and will take appropriate action behind the scenes. It's best to file one report per seller with all of the info in one report - if there are listings from different sellers, they can be reported separately. If you file multiple complaints on a listing, or on multiple listings from one seller, this can slow down our team from getting to your complaint.
In order for us to make the most of your complaint, we need as much information as possible. It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3!
-
Choosing the right complaint subject
It’s important to let us know exactly what the issue is with the listing you’re reporting, so we know what to keep an eye out for. You can let us know if:
- It shouldn’t be listed (or the listing should be withdrawn)
- The way it's listed is incorrect
- Someone’s using the Q&A inappropriately
- The seller is trying to avoid paying the right fees
- There are intellectual property concerns (counterfeit items, breach of trademark, etc.)
- It’s a face mask that’s not in line with our mask policy
If your complaint doesn’t neatly fit into the above, you can choose the ‘something else’ option. When you do this, it’s particularly important to include as much information as possible.
-
Give us all the details!
Because we can’t all be industry experts about the 8 million listings on the site at any given time, we appreciate a helping hand from those who are. It’s important for us that you point out exactly where the issue is and why it’s a problem. Don’t be afraid to spell it out for us!
For example, if a listing is in the wrong category, it’s really helpful to let us know which category it should be in.
Or, if you think an item is a counterfeit product, don’t forget to add why you think that. Providing us with your source of information is a great way to do that. -
Attach any supporting evidence
Our team can only take action based on the evidence they can see. That’s why we need as much info from you as possible, regardless of which complaint subject you’ve chosen.
Most of the time, the evidence will be in the listing itself. Sometimes though, it’s not.
For example, if a car is listed on the site, and the seller has told you it’s been sold already. From our end, we have no way of telling the item isn’t up for grabs anymore – unless the seller mentions this in the description or Q&A themselves. If you’ve emailed or texted them, include a screenshot of your conversation with them so we can see if they’ve said it’s no longer available.
Here are some examples of great reports
Example 1

This report has the right options selected, and gives further detail about what specifically isn’t right about the listing. Nice!
Example 2

This report specifies why this isn’t the right category for the item that’s listed. Ka pai!
Here are some examples of not so great reports
Example 1

This one needs a bit of love. This report doesn’t give any information about what’s wrong with the listing or seller. We can’t do anything with this one.
Example 2

This is a well-detailed report, but the seller has no links to contact them, it is listed in the right spot, and is selling their parts through the site. All is good!
Example 3
Without any information or reasons why the item listed could be counterfeit, we don't have a lot to go on with this report.
So with these points in mind...
Go forth, make some great reports, and help us to help you!
If you have any questions, post them below

Kia ora Bryn, we are only able to take action on listings that are live on the site, so closed listings can't be Community watched. You might find that a seller is sharing contact details on their other listings and you can report through those.

Hi I am suspicous of a trader here, I was looking for an oven thermometer. Several listed under $10, and one looking the same for $74.75 I thought I would look at that to see if it was superior. Nothing to report. I looked at their other listings, every single item is the same price! from a bottle of hand cleaner to washing machine agitator. Isn't that strange? O the trader is called "Agency Spare Parts" claiming to be Australian based.

I think they have made sort of huge blunder. 4106 items listed all the same price and all in the same category. I've asked them a Q on one of their listings to bring to their attention.

Seller has answered my Q saying "thank you we are working on it now", and I see they have some at different prices now.

Hello,
We are recruitment business. We have not been paying for advertising on Trade Me, but ads continue to appear without our permission or knowledge. Great free advertising for us, but not so good when ad details are inaccurate or incomplete. Also we have no control over the ad, so when the vacancy has been filled, we are unable to take the listing down, causing people to be disappointed because they have applied for an advertised job that doesn't exist. Here is an example -

This job has been filled but we are unable to remove the ad because we didn't place it!

Apologies to the T & S team if I have been sending duplicate reports. Now the site has been changed this week so Visited Community watch links no longer change in colour, it is impossible to know which listings have previously been reported. I can't really think what the logic was to make this change, but at least Visited links change of colour still works fine on the old desktop site.

Kia ora Gary-NZStocked, I can see how that would make things a bit tricky. I've passed this on to the team.

This change also affects categories too. One of my fav searches that gives results in many categories no longer has colour change to visited links showing on the css, except weirdly to the Books category. Now when flipping to each category I have to manually note or remember which ones I've been to. Such a waste of time.

Here's a similar search I did on the old desktop site just now and you can see it's so much clearer when visited links change colour, which is obviously why browser designers made it that way.

Michelle, The Community Watch link now has the Visited link colour change added back in to the css, so it's working now, as is the categories visited link color change. Hopefully they leave that alone now it's been corrected.

Hi, a seller has offered a fixed price offer for his item, Listing #: 5384653742. This seller has 4 unanswered questions from when his listing was live, 2 of which stated his listing description did not match his title description (photo and title for a pair of birkenstock boston shoes, however the description was for a pair of adidas shoes) I am keen to accept the fixed price offer for the birkenstocks, however I am unsure which shoe will be sent (Birkenstocks will be for my childs birthday)
The seller has no other current listings, so I cannot ask for clarification for said listing.Any advice or guidance regarding this listing would be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou
Kind Regards

Kia Ora Kelly,
The Listing has been purchased by another Member,
It's always best to wait for an answer to a question therefore you a sure of the authenticity of the Listing & item(s). - As there are no further Listings being run by the Seller one would add them as a Favourite so you are emailed when the goods are relisted, if you have selected that option through your email preference, allowing you to ask questions then if the Seller hasn't included the further information on relisting the item(s). - If the Seller is not providing answers to questions this can indicate a potential communication issue should something go wrong with the Trade. - Cheers.

Kia Ora Scott,
How long ago did you make the purchase?
Sellers are allowed 7 days from receiving your address & payment in which to complete the Trade though they should be in contact with you asap & within 2 days.
- Have you tried emailing your Seller?
- Have you checked the payment instructions & the Seller's Profile page for a contact number to call?
- Have you checked your spam / junk folder in case an email has ended up there?
- Have you sent your address for Delivery through TradeMe, if this isn't a pick up option?
- Have you checked your Won items to see if a Courier tracking has been applied?
- Have you placed Feedback yet? - This normally gains a response.
Feedback can ask your Seller to check their Email spam / junk folder as you have emailed them and to please contact you. - Feedback can be changed once the Trade has completed though it can only be changed the once.Is your Seller 'In Trade'? - They may have provided you with their phone contact number in their Payment Instructions or in their Account Profile Otherwise is it possible this is a registered business company? If you think they may be you can look them up online under the NZ Companies Register to possibly obtain contact telephone number(s) and physical address. If you have no response to your email or feedback placed and it has surpassed a week you will want to select the Dispute Resolution Tab in your Won items Or at the very bottom of the Help file below for TradeMe's assistance.I hope your Seller is well and you hear from them soon - Cheers.0 -
I have bid on some Chloe designer sunglasses. I bid 3x and reached the reserve. A day or so later someone other than the trader bid $1 more. I think that either the trader or the friend of the trader wishes to force me into a bidding war to force up the price. This won't happen. The trade closes on Sunday night.

I would suggest that, for now, you do not make any further Bids. Just patiently wait until a minute or two before the Trade Expiry time- then Bid .(As in Poker, do not unnecessarily show your hand early) A 'confederate' (if there is any) may, seeing no further bidding interest, be lulled into thinking that their conspiratorial arrangement has worked and is therefore unlikely to sit around to scrutinise those last two minutes. Through Trade Me I paid $318.45 for a light to (an Australian Company). However, online (their website) it is $203 AUD which currently equates to $224.15 NZD. I was surprised by the variation, and disappointed that I appear to have been charged considerably more than this light is selling for online. The item was listed as free shipping on Trade Me. When I queried the price, this was the response:
Hi Robyn,Our pricing is subject to change and is dependent on stock availability, cost pricing and supplier special deals. The prices listed on Trademe also include a small portion of the shipping and handling fees. When you place an order it will come through to our system in Australian Dollars minus the GST, that is the reason for there being multiple different balances.So..... not free shipping after all - is this false advertising?Edited in line with Community guidelines0 -
S Community SuperuserIn this case Robyn no!You have agreed to purchase the item at the price it was listed at and no more for shipping ontop of that Therefore the deal was done. - Sellers can add as much profit margin to the items they list for sale as they choose to, the market will surely let them know if that profit margin is too higher a price anyone is prepared to pay.TradeMe's Code of Conduct states:<quote> Shipping charges should not be inflated for profit, and must be a fair and reasonable reflection of the actual packaging and postage costs. <unquote>Therefore Sellers are able to pass a small fee onto the Buyer which in this case has been included in the Price of the item for sale. - Cheers.0

Listing #5492548781 - illegal listing.
Branded Ibanez guitar which the seller clearly states is a copy he made. This is illegal to sell or buy, even for private use, due to copyright infringement.
