Payment on Pick Up
AnsweredHi, what is people's views on payment on pick up? I only have bank deposit as a payment option. I dont like taking cash, and dont want to use PING. I want people to pay via bank deposit prior to pick up as I want to see the money in my account before they take the goods away. I dont want to have to worry about it eventually showing up, or the buyer didnt do it properly - either by accident or intentionally.
Is this reasonable? What do other people do/accept?

Kia Ora AJ,
Paying cash on Pick up is a safety net for a number of Buyers who want to ensure the goods are actually in hand & in as described condition prior to handing payment over. - This can be the difference in making a sale/quick sale. - There is increased scepticism with the increased sophistication of scams and the fact there isn't a view before purchase option. - Cheers.

I accept cash and Ping, but I know some don't. That's OK. I guess by not accepting cash or Ping you are cutting yourself off from quite a few buyers. Especially if you are selling higher value items. Many people like the protection Ping offers.
As long as you have it clearly stated on your listing that you don't accept cash it shouldn't be a problem. Many people do seem to expect that if you are offering pick-up then you should also accept cash.
How do you handle those people who want to view an item in person before they pay? That can't really be done if you demand a bank deposit before you allow them to collect it. People are getting increasingly aware of scams. The advice when buying online is always to pay cash if you are picking something up........

In relaition to the security, condition and potential scams, I just refer people to my very high positive feedback rating.
Yes I do realise I maybe excluding some buyers by not offering other payment options but im ok with that.
The only payment option on my auction is bank deposit. Cash is not displayed as an option so noone should really expect to be able to pay cash, even though some do, and I do understand why people might They could argue that paying on pick up is not against my payment terms on the auction, and they would be correct.
If they have asked prior to bidding, I will allow them to cancell if they dont like what they see when they pick up and I will refund their payment. If they dont ask, I generally wont but I play it by ear, particularly if a high value item and the buyer. I describe items honestly and with good photos so there are no surprises and never had someone pull out of a sale.

I ask that all purchases are paid for before pick up - which enables me to leave parcels for collection in our letterbox. I gave up on waiting for people to arrive at a given time a long time ago. . I do NOT accept cash payments.

People whom will not accept cash are literally cutting their own throats, and losing themself sales,
Cash is King and always will be, after the many disasters over the past few years in NZ, internet outages bank outages, power outages, eftpos going down etc. people are indeed learning to always carry cash, Cash is coming back big time, a lot have wised up to the nonsense of having cashless society, it will never happen,
So if you do not accept cash, expect to lose sales, people want to pay cash on pickup to rule out any scams etc. make sure items are as described, so have option of walking away from trades if items have not been described honestly, especially furniture, as there is no viewing before buying,
they also do not want to pay in advance only to find out that the address they have been given is bogus, If you don't want to wait around for people etc. just do not have pick ups,

I dont want this post to be a debate about why people take or not take certain payment types, everyone has their preferences. For me, its not about being cashless. The money sits in my wallet for ages as Im not close to a bank and Id rather have it being useful to me and earning interest rather than just collecting dust. I also understand why people prefer cash for a range of reasons.
Funny enough I have a different experience with not accepting cash. Yes I may lose out on people buying, but I have a higher % of sales completed. Once a sale is made, I find more are completed. The reason for this is that they make the deposit almost immediately and as they've made the deposit, they then have to pick it up. When I was accepting cash on pick up, I had more buyers simply not pick up.
