Seller not necessarily up to "no good', but unusual order of payment.
I have a seller who is insisting on payment into a bank account before they will send me the pick up location, or other real identification .
The buyer is local, and insists on the item being picked up. The sale was made today, and I have requested to pick up and pay for the item tomorrow[following day] in cash upon pick up, but the seller has declined this offer, and is refusing to provide an alternative time, and insists that I put the money in their personal bank account before they will surrender any further details.
I am a little uncomfortable with making payment without the seller identifying their details like the location of the recipient bank branch, or being given an opportunity to locate the item or positive identification of the seller other than online. There are multiple listing for similar items from the same seller at differing prices.
Because the seller has declined my request to pick up and pay for the item the day after the sale has been made, I am unable to follow through with collection until the following weekend, which leaves a week between the seller receiving payment and the earliest I can pick up the item, so I would feel more comfortable if I, or the Trade Me Team could have more specific details from the seller.
While I am not suggesting that the seller has dishonest intent, the capacity none the less exists for matters to go wrong with the sale; eg non delivery via being "ghosted" re the pickup location. I am uncomfortable with the risk of being asked to put money into a bank account without receiving the assurance of a firm identification of the existence of the goods or the location thereof.
Have you got any suggestions about a way forward with this issue?

Jayne, presumably the seller had Cash as one of the payment options listed on the auction?, in which case it does seem strange that they are now insisting on internet banking. If they didn't have cash as an option and only had online payments, then it would have been best to ask if you wanted something different to what's listed on the auction before bidding/buying, as once the listing is closed, the seller is unable to alter the terms unless you can negotiate with them, but this doesn't seem to have worked.
Maybe you could offer your contact details to the seller first or ask to phone them to better explain the situation.

It is odd? Did the auction have only pay by bank deposit, or was cash an option? If cash was an option that they had created when they put the listing up, then they need to stick to the terms of their auction, which they set. If cash was not an option, and they disabled it when they created their listing, then you need to abide by the terms they set. In saying that ....
There is a couple of problems with what they want to do -
Problem one, is that this could be a scam and they take your money and abscond with it, without you getting the item, what they are asking/saying does sound like a red flag.
Problem two, is that you are missing out on the opportunity to inspect before payment, which is the big advantage of buyer picks up auctions.
However - this could also be quite innocent and there are reasons why a seller might do this.
The first one that comes to mind, is that this could be a person who is sick of people not paying, and not picking up, they have been let down so often and so badly in the past that they have gotten fed up with it and have decided "No I am doing anything until I have been paid! I am over this B.S!!!" , There is sellers out there that think if people pay, that they will pick up faster / at all (But sadly this is not the case, people will pay and then vanish like a fart in breeze regardless if the have paid or not).
This could also be a case of their situation at home, they could be living with someone they dont trust and simply dont what to have cash around the house.
Its up to you to decide if you want to go through with the trade or not, these demands they are making are a red flag, its up to you if its worth the risk or not.

Kia Ora Jayne,
I understand the hesitancy to pay before an address is supplied However looking from a Seller's standpoint there are bogus Bidders who have dishonest intentions in scoping address's for goods and perhaps your Seller has experienced some ill toward actions in the past. - Paying upfront is the same you would do before a Seller couriered the item out to you therefore not too dis-similar for Buyers. - Your Seller's Feedback page should put you at ease here. - Definitely if the Listing allowed for cash on Pick up you can hold them to that, as Gary & Simon have advised.
Congratulations on your Purchase - Cheers 😊
