How a common scam on here at the moment plays out.
FeaturedI have noticed an increase in posts lately, and have been targeted myself, by a type of phishing scam that is prevalent at present on Trade Me. This post is just to give people an idea what it looks like so they can be warned. Everything is fairly professional looking at a glance over. English and grammar OK. Trade Me images and links clear and looking good. My item sold at 11:47am. Trade Me emailed me a warning at 12:54pm. So fairly fast reaction from Trade Me.
Someone buys your item with buynow. You will get the standard genuine item sold email from Trade Me, and also a scam email. The "buyer" might also leave you feedback or ask questions on your other listings urging you to read and comply with an email they will send you "via Trade Me."
This is what the first scam email you receive looks like. Obviously I have added the big blue SCAM

If you click on "confirm" you get this page. Again, all pretty nice looking, with a Live Chat system at the side. There are some warnings here though. The price. My item was $10 but they say they sent me $750. The address isn't real nor is the buyers user ID. But the item they purchased is correct.

Then if you click "Get Funds" you are sent to another page which has the major banks icons. This takes you to the internet banking login page. The page you get directed to is an EXACT copy of the genuine internet banking page. The only way you would know you are not on the correct page is the URL which is fake. From here the scammer will harvest your internet banking details, then presumably use those to clean out your account...........

WoW! Callum, - Thank you for this valuable insight at how advanced the imitation is - Much appreciated 😊👍

another to watch out for , the nz post scam , I was actually expecting a parcel , got sent a text with a link (red flag straight away), took me to a page requesting money , the thing was the tracking number was a real tracking number and showed up as "problem with delivery"
obviously to some other random package but really convincing , If I didn't actually know the tracking number on my parcel it could be easy to be scammed if you are in a rush
5 -
Kia Ora Scott,
Have you reported this with evidence to NZ Post? - this sounds like some deep infiltration into their system to link a parcel recipient of theirs up with a Live Tracking number!
Thanks for the heads up - Much appreciated 😊

yep reported straight away , but who knows where this goes? sadly any acknowledgement of any errors to any service these days are lost the abyss of "report a problem"
1 -
Well Done Scott and for spotting the scam in the first place - All one can do is report to the correct place and remain vigilant - Cheers.😊

Wow this happened to. Me too.. hope trade me sorts it

I keep getting scammed on items I'm selling and trade me charges the 25c fee each time. 50c today alone so what is the point of this post when this has been going on for ages now atleast 2 months? Is there a trade me alternative or have kiwis been held hostage by this inept bunch?
2 -
So I already paid and then they send me an automated bot email that never gets a response right so now I'm like OK I've sucked it up twice in the past but now I have to keep rolling with it? Trade me you do realise yiur counterparts in Singapore and Malaysia will push you out of business when they realise there's a problem that can easily be handled but you guys haven't figured it out yet? As a seller it's extremely annoying it happens on both business and personal accounts and it's just costing us money to post things for sale. We need an alternative this can't go on.

I got scammed once this morning and then within 3 hours again. If I try "sell something similar" I am charged the 25c to run an auction and have it back where it was. How on earth does that make sense?
1 -
When I tried to forward a copy of the phishing email it bounced back because trade me do not receive emails! When you try call trade me there's a per minute fee as they do not want to talk to you. The online ecommerce platform space is a massive and growing market it looks like they've rested on their laurels so long that it's time to absolutely carve up market share from them. Unreal.

If you are only selling 1 item it's fine but if you are trying to sell multiple items that have built up over the last few years it becomes a night mare. I've been told to hit up FB market place but I'm still out of pocket and TIME.

I'll come back everyday untill this is resolved and leave comments of what's happened each day.

Also if you as Trade Me know it's a scam why on earth would you not just relist the item and reinstate the entire listing immediately rather than charge me to do it for you?

Kia ora Tom. Where our sellers have been the victims of a scam like this one, we will always refund the listing and promotional fees. You do not need to swallow those yourself and I'm sorry if you remain out of pocket. I'm going to get the team to contact you directly since this is something that we will need to sort for you. You can then make the choice as to whether you want to apply the promotional extras to the new listings when you relist or use 'sell similar'.

Hi Tom. The Trade Me general customer support phone numbers (including the pay one) disappeared years ago. So I am not sure what phone number you are trying to call them on? All contact with Trade Me is free, via live chat.
To forward suspicious emails to Trade Me the email address is abuse@trademe.co.nz

Hi there, any chance I could have my promotional and listing fees refunded on two of my listing please?
0 -
Elesha Unless Lucy returns it would be best to contact Trade Me directly to get those refunded. Hit the Contact Us button at the bottom of the page then the blue help or chat bubble that will pop up.

I got hit by this scam, however Trademe reminded and deleted and banned their account before I even looked at the emails
I left them some colourful language remarks on their chat,

Well spotted and Thank you for reporting this,
Trust & Safety have your report in hand now to look into closing Both accounts asap.
Keep an eye on your Emails for any further attempts, as you can see they look so legitimate, if you aren't expecting to hear from any companies you may be contacted by you can always phone the company if you are unsure. - Don't reply to those emails until you are confident they are authentic and Most Importantly Don't click on any Links. - Cheers.

Cheers G,
Gosh that's such a brazen response from them!
Yes! Blacklisting them from your email is a great idea and move their emails into your spam/junk folder - the Gmail system will pick them up and block their address from the server - Keeping everyone safe! 😊

Garry. Where are you getting your information that the chat page has been hacked from? I haven't seen anything like that.
While these things can be frustrating, I don't think making threats of physical violence is something that belongs on this forum.
