How a common scam on here at the moment plays out.
FeaturedI have noticed an increase in posts lately, and have been targeted myself, by a type of phishing scam that is prevalent at present on Trade Me. This post is just to give people an idea what it looks like so they can be warned. Everything is fairly professional looking at a glance over. English and grammar OK. Trade Me images and links clear and looking good. My item sold at 11:47am. Trade Me emailed me a warning at 12:54pm. So fairly fast reaction from Trade Me.
Someone buys your item with buynow. You will get the standard genuine item sold email from Trade Me, and also a scam email. The "buyer" might also leave you feedback or ask questions on your other listings urging you to read and comply with an email they will send you "via Trade Me."
This is what the first scam email you receive looks like. Obviously I have added the big blue SCAM

If you click on "confirm" you get this page. Again, all pretty nice looking, with a Live Chat system at the side. There are some warnings here though. The price. My item was $10 but they say they sent me $750. The address isn't real nor is the buyers user ID. But the item they purchased is correct.

Then if you click "Get Funds" you are sent to another page which has the major banks icons. This takes you to the internet banking login page. The page you get directed to is an EXACT copy of the genuine internet banking page. The only way you would know you are not on the correct page is the URL which is fake. From here the scammer will harvest your internet banking details, then presumably use those to clean out your account...........

WoW! Callum, - Thank you for this valuable insight at how advanced the imitation is - Much appreciated 😊👍

another to watch out for , the nz post scam , I was actually expecting a parcel , got sent a text with a link (red flag straight away), took me to a page requesting money , the thing was the tracking number was a real tracking number and showed up as "problem with delivery"
obviously to some other random package but really convincing , If I didn't actually know the tracking number on my parcel it could be easy to be scammed if you are in a rush

Kia Ora Scott,
Have you reported this with evidence to NZ Post? - this sounds like some deep infiltration into their system to link a parcel recipient of theirs up with a Live Tracking number!
Thanks for the heads up - Much appreciated 😊

yep reported straight away , but who knows where this goes? sadly any acknowledgement of any errors to any service these days are lost the abyss of "report a problem"

Well Done Scott and for spotting the scam in the first place - All one can do is report to the correct place and remain vigilant - Cheers.😊

Also if you as Trade Me know it's a scam why on earth would you not just relist the item and reinstate the entire listing immediately rather than charge me to do it for you?

Kia ora Tom. Where our sellers have been the victims of a scam like this one, we will always refund the listing and promotional fees. You do not need to swallow those yourself and I'm sorry if you remain out of pocket. I'm going to get the team to contact you directly since this is something that we will need to sort for you. You can then make the choice as to whether you want to apply the promotional extras to the new listings when you relist or use 'sell similar'.

I got hit by this scam, however Trademe reminded and deleted and banned their account before I even looked at the emails
I left them some colourful language remarks on their chat,

Kia Ora G,
Well spotted and Thank you for reporting this,
Trust & Safety have your report in hand now to look into closing Both accounts asap.
Keep an eye on your Emails for any further attempts, as you can see they look so legitimate, if you aren't expecting to hear from any companies you may be contacted by you can always phone the company if you are unsure. - Don't reply to those emails until you are confident they are authentic and Most Importantly Don't click on any Links. - Cheers.

Cheers G,
Gosh that's such a brazen response from them!
Yes! Blacklisting them from your email is a great idea and move their emails into your spam/junk folder - the Gmail system will pick them up and block their address from the server - Keeping everyone safe! 😊

Garry. Where are you getting your information that the chat page has been hacked from? I haven't seen anything like that.
While these things can be frustrating, I don't think making threats of physical violence is something that belongs on this forum.

Cheers Callum,
I can verify All my Chat sessions are with Genuine Team Staff Members - I've not seen or heard any different.

On Monday 30/10/23 we paid three dollars for a mystery box ? Our payment was in pending mode till yesterday when our bank ASB contacted us stating that this looked like a scam. The bank has put my credit card on hold until we can clear this matter up. Can you send me an email confirming that this is a scam so I can contact my bank urgently.

Hi John. This was a Trade Me purchase? Sounds like something you would need to contact them directly about. Try Live Chat. Have the information to hand like purchase reference number. Live Chat is open now.

The Herald has done an article on this round of scams by the look. Paywalled so I haven't read it.

Seems my account was hacked into today! Items were listed that I wasn't selling! and each time i withdrew the auction it was relisted! Finally reported, changed password twice and since then it's been ok. Be careful out there the scams and people behind them are getting more sophisticated! The item trying to be sold in my account was Apple Watches, very cheap, how I picked it up was I got an email with a "question" on my auction, otherwise I would never have known!

Hi, I think I've been scammed by a seller. I hope someone here can help, as TM support so far has been hopeless.
I was in a Live chat earlier today with a real person (Gemz), I gave them the auction reference # and all other details. They said they would email the seller directly on my behalf. As per TM policy, I should be getting cc'ed in that email, and I should also get a transcript of the chat. I didn't get either.
I read somewhere in this forum someone had experience of Live chat being hacked?
Has someone had experience of paying a seller using Ping, and the seller doesn't contact you after 3 days. Can TM just cancel the trade and refund you straight away?
0 -
Callum Community Superuser
Hi Amarie. I think to be fair to the seller you would need to wait a bit longer than 3 days. Not all people are on their devices all the time. Life happens sometimes. Especially over weekends. If 7 days have passed and you still haven't had any contact from the seller that's probably when I would consider taking things further. You can do that by opening a dispute from your items I won page. But they can't "just cancel the trade and refund you" they need to give the seller time to respond.
Live Chat has not been hacked.

Kia Ora Amarie,
Sorry to read your concerns there,
3 days is not long considering 2 of them are the weekend - it's normal for some Sellers to handle all business transactions during week day business hours therefore they don't check their TM Trade status or emails until the Monday. - This is not Best Practice though it does occur.
What you can do...
- Have you Emailed your Seller at all?
- Have you checked your spam / junk folder in case an email has ended up there?
- Have you sent your address for Delivery through TM or is it Pick up?
- Have you checked your Won items to see if a Courier tracking has been applied through TM's BAC? if this is the shipping method.
If you don't hear from your Seller in the next couple of business working days you can place feedback stating awaiting response from Seller and to please contact you. - Friendly Feedback is Best in these early stages and can be changed, once only, depending on outcome. As TM staff are contacting your Seller on your behalf hopefully you will hear early in the week. - I hope your Seller is well - Cheers.0 -

Amarie,
If you go to Callum's Examples at the beginning of this Post you will see and read of the Fake Live Chat pic which comes through these Email Scams! As per Link below - This is Not TM.
https://help.trademe.co.nz/hc/en-us/community/posts/7974578288271/comments/7974586171791
TM don't send cc emails on every case they enter into email correspondence - the policy clearly states 'may' - so no concern for you whilst they initiate contact with your Seller. - That's great you have such immediate assistance from staff.
The Chat Transcript is likely to be still be coming through the system - this is not always immediate depending on wknd process's ticking over there.
Hope this helps and All the Best - Cheers.
