Potential buyer has asked to use Paypal - is this a scam?
we have a item for sale. someone has contacted us, asking us to email their dad who is interested. This person then said he will buy but pay into a pay pal account. Is this a scam?

Kia Ora Sarah,
It very may well be - the option to share your listing by email is available for all Members to send themselves And TM don't accept payment by Pay pal.
You can Blacklist this Member immediately to prevent them asking questions and Bidding on your Listings - And Give TradeMe "Live Chat" a go to get immediate assistance with investigating this Members account.
The "Live Chat" hours are weekdays are 8:am - 6:30pm and weekends 8:30am - 4:pm
Once you've selected the Contact us Chat Tab you need to give the landing page a count of 15+ seconds for the Chat Tab to Pop up in blue at the bottom right of your screen, there is a slight delay in this appearing. - Cheers.

Although Trademe don't accept Paypal payments themselves, there is nothing stopping any seller from using Paypal or any number of other payment gateways. Paypal is a trusted gateway, but like anything, it can be used for fraud by scammers. Best to be careful if you are not familiar with using Paypal and ask for cash or NZ bank deposit. Like S says, let Trademe know and they can have a look at the members account.

Kia ora Sarah, the team here contacted you yesterday morning about that enquiry - it was in fact a scam. Please reply to the email from Trade Me if you have any questions.
We always recommend steering away from other payment methods such as Paypal or Western Union. If the buyer is legitimate, there shouldn't be a reason they can't pay by simple bank transfer.2 -
The other thing Sarah (even if this was not a scam) is don't let buyers bully you into something you don't want to do, for example if you had created a listing that said "CASH ONLY" then that is your right, and if a buyer cannot figure that out, then its their problem to solve not yours to solve for them. Stick to your guns.

i know these comments are 8 months old but maybe someone will read this
i am in Australia and only use PayPal for online purchases and it is very secure and can pay anyone anywhere anytime
i do not use ping or afterpay so can't comment on them but i guess they are secure also will have a look and see
just have to be careful of scams doesn't matter what method of payment is used
cheers
