Photo or image quality is inferior these days
One has to click on a photo these days for clarity. The zoom feature has gone. The colour of images when uploaded to a listing now is inferior. Still waiting to see an improvement over the fantastic old website. Not one feature is better.

Oh God! I thought it was just me! I take photo - look at on my camera and it looks fine, I then upload photo onto my PC and review it, and it looks great! I upload it to my listing and it looks like a dogs dinner.
I know my photography is not great but this site is doing me no favours righ now and making my already mediocre work even more trash. Its important for our ability to be able to sell stuff to be able to put up decent photos.

Hi Sarah, and Simon. There is a maximum file size of 5MB per photo when adding them to a listing, so it could be that your photos are larger and being scaled down - otherwise, your photos should be appearing the same before and after being uploaded. If you'd like our team to double-check, you can send through the photos to be looked over

The problem is not the file size but the compression ratio TM uses for photos, which seems to be around 19% compression, which is quite high, obviously to reduce file size so pages load quicker.
I usually use 5% and when I upload an image of 3.3mb at 5%, TM re-compresses to 19%. I download that same image to compare to my original upload that was 5% and the file size has dropped from 206K to 146K.
Best thing to do really is to adjust and compress to 19% before uploading, then TM doesn't re-compress. Not sure what 19% equates to with different cameras, but many have a fine, superfine, medium setting, and others let you specify the compression, so some experimenting may be necessary.

Thanks for your reponse and info Gary. May be TM could stop compressing our photos. Obviously they weren't before. Would be good if I could click on your user name and be transported to your TM pages and view any images you have listed but that's not possible now. I have yet to find an improvement in this new website. May be one day TM will accept HEIC images.

TM have always compressed images. From memory, it was a similar compression ratio as years ago when I did a similar exercise. The main difference now is that on the desktop site it was possible to simply click an image to enlarge it with a magnifying glass to full size to see detail, albeit compressed from original, but now on the mobile site you can't do that on site, without right clicking and viewing image in new tab, or similar.

What about the zoom feature? It is really hard to bid on items when you can't zoom in to check the details. Why was this feature removed?

Can we expect the zoom feature on photos to reappear? Very disappointing that actual colours now appear drab when they are uploaded on to Trademe. Red is brown tinged .... Images on the old website were perfect. Buyers should be able to see an item with far greater clarity than what is now available.

Why, why, why when we click on a Poster's name can we not access their Trademe Page? I'm still waiting to see an improvement over the fantastic old site.

Totally agree ... photos now come out blurred. Tried all sorts of compressions to get them right but they still look rubbish.

You can't even put your username in your listings anymore.
