My Ping account was been hacked in the past.
My ping account showed no movement but someone had got into in and started buying small and building up in amounts once they knew their scam was working. They stopped the purchases showing up in my Ping account and we only saw what was happening when we checked something else on our Visa account. Our Visa card was stopped by the bank and a new one was issued. Trade Me promised they would refund the over $1000 that was already charged but it was a battle to get the money into our account before the Visa payment had to be paid.
To me, Ping is a dangerous option and should be used only as a last resort.

Most crime involving Financial matters is by someone who one has had previous Communications with, including Business Process Outsourcing contracted agents.
Have a read of the case involving Stephen Valsako ASB Remuera.
Some interesting information in there.
We can relate to what you have said Simon277 as also been on the receiving end more than once with financial crime.
It's traumatic to sort out and get all those new Documents is expensive.
Those in charge of financial systems have known for a very long time the issues we are now all facing with Digital Currency systems, yet what have they done?
Keep telling us to do Multiple layers of Authentication.
Like that's going to help in the Digital age when no one knows exactly who is seeing and gaining access to our private information.
Banking staff, and others by the way can read one's password on their computers as keystrokes and have from time to time been caught and accountable.
It's much harder to track down alleged offenders on the WWW.

When you say your Ping account was hacked, you mean your Trade me account was hacked? Ping is not a separate entity.
I believe you have the option to save your credit/debit card on here or not. I assume you did. So just like any other online website, there are risks in doing that if your password isn't strong.
Trade Me have added more security recently. Your hacker likely wouldn't have been able to gain access nowadays. Because they would have needed to input a code sent to your email address. This seems to trigger when someone (including you) attempts to access Trade Me from a different device or vastly different IP address.

Nothing showed on my account, I think the person set up a new account with TM and used my ping/visa for the charges.
This was a few years ago and I have tried to avoid ping ever since.

Callum. I use the same laptop for my TradeMe account and don't use any other devices. I have to log in using the six digit code every time I log in, often multiple times a day if I log out and back in again. Trade Me aren't interested in helping me fix the problem and at the last attempt, basically said "it does this from time to time, one day it will just stop dig it". It is broken, I know it, they know it, but no fix is forthcoming. I have no faith that the ping system will be any better and as it involves money, my money, I have serious concerns about it being forced onto users.

Kia ora simon277, sorry to hear about your experience on the site. We work hard to keep the site safe for our members, as scammers become increasingly sophisticated we are constantly reviewing our security processes. The changes we have made, offering Ping on every listing, are all about keeping our users safe. While most fraudulent activity on Trade Me is resolved swiftly, in 2025 nearly all of the scams that they couldn't help their customers involved bank transfers. By moving to a more secure system, we can double our Buyer Protection for you from $2,500 to $5,000, giving you much greater peace of mind.

Yes Michelle, so Trade Me keeps saying the same thing over and over but you are not listening to a number of your members who do not want Ping. We just want to trade using our bank accounts and you are refusing to allow us any choice in the matter, as well as threatening us if we try and circumvent Ping. Such a good look for Trade Me - Yeah right!

I don't have a scammer problem, I have a buyer problem, as they seem to have deserted TradeMe over the last 6 months. Yet other sales platforms seem to be doing okay.

I wonder if it is to do with the two courier options Trade Me offers, they prices can be much more than some of the other couriers i.e. Pass the parcel.

I have never used any of TradeMe's postage options. Which is why I think them clipping the freight ticket is wrong. I have never liked 'one stop shops', because once everyone is locked in, the costs go up and the service goes down.

Michelle, you said that using Ping was to keep users "safe", yet when you list an item it says "buyers preferred option". So which is it? I have never been asked as a buyer if I would prefer Ping over the other options. This is TradeMe telling us that is what's going to happen and lie about why. I've never had a problem with bank deposits going both ways.
