Have you looked through the exclusions for getting a Ping refund?  They are not user friendly either.

It was implied in the statement that I found on one of the Trade Me links, going back I cannot find where it was, but it definitely was there.  I wondered how they would know too but I suppose if the seller is in Auckland and the buyer is in Invercargill that might be a give away, as will someone then booking an item with the TM couriers.

Shortsbandy, if you have someone offer cash and then pay you by bank transfer that will have you removed from Trade Me. Go hunting in the payment section and follow all the extra info and that piece of nastiness is in there.

And obliging the buyers will get you into trouble with Trade Me.

Just realized that your Ping failure is the same as the bank transfers that Ping is supposed to fix.  A Yeah Right moment.
