Beware of the Ping fee on Sunday's "free" selling promotion
AnsweredRe the promotion on Sunday, 15/06, beware of the Ping fee attached to this promotion.
100% off success fees, but a 2.19% Png transaction fee that you have to pay, as a seller!.
So it is not really Free Selling tomorrow, at all!
Pay no success fees. Sun 15 Jun
For general items. All listings will have payment by Ping.
- When creating a listing, Ping will be selected as the payment option.
- When a buyer pays with Ping, the money lands in your Ping balance instantly.
- You get paid right away - just minus a 2.19% transaction fee

Yeah I guess companies have been doing this kind of thing since forever.....
Get this FREE! (just pay shipping) used to be a classic one. Still is on some of those Made for TV infomercials.
At least Trade Me do make it pretty clear there will be a Ping fee on their email

Ok, well I won't be getting it free then LOL. Saw the email but havent read it yet. I also see it states new listings will have ping added, so will relists NOT have ping added?

AJ,
This particular Promo states
Discount applies to relists, but only if they are relisted on the day of the promotion. Only applies for the first listing period.
- Cheers.

On the email I received about this promotion, it says
free selling today only!
but it is not until you open that email that you see the details about Ping being attached.
Also, when you go onto Trade Me, this states: 100% off success fees this Sun. learn more.
But it is not until you open-up Learn more that you see the details about Ping being attached.
So the details about Ping are not clear, at first, until you open up either of those, and then read the details.
That is why I put up this post, to create awareness of this issue, in case sellers hadn't read the details, and then, when anything sold, they wondered why they had been charged the 2.19% Ping fee, instead of expecting - as with previous promotions - that the 100% off success fees meant no fees at all, and therefore totally free selling.

Thanks S, Im particularly asking about ping being added to relists, so if the discount applies to relists AND ping will be added to all listings today, then it sounds like they will have ping added.
Luckily I purposely left my account in negative yesterday so My Products couldnt relist stuff until today (when I was going to add more credit). Im just going to leave it that way until tomorrow to avoid any possibility of ping being added.
I also find it disturbing that these auctions will have ping added by trademe, these seems a breach of our rights to decide what form of payment we want to accept

Thanks Paris for the post - yes I agree great to highlight this for others

Hi AJ, thank you for your comments.
I don't use Ping either, because of the additional cost.
It wasn't clearly-stated, for this promotion, whether Ping would still be attached to relistings, and, if it was, whether you could manually remove it, and would then have to laboriously do this, listing-by-listing.
So I decided to opt-out of today's promotion, for that reason, and listed last night, instead.

I dont use ping for the exact same reason and I will opt out too. Maybe the ping fee will be less than the listing fee so might be better, but the ping payment option will stay until manually removed and I dont want to have to to this to all my listings. Maybe it can be done as a bulk action in myproducts, but i have no interest

Hi AJ, yes, as I mainly just sell $1 items, by the time Ping is added at 2.19% of the item, it is better for me to sell at just $1 with no selling fee on items that are $1 or less, and no Ping added to the item.
The free or discounted selling days are good for items that are listed at and sell for more than $1.
Some sellers may not be aware, with today's promotion, that the 2.19% Ping fee is added to the item.

Kia Ora All,
I can confirm the Ping option will apply for the entire day whether or not you have reached the Threshold of the first 100 Listings including Relists Therefore if you don't want the Ping option I've been advised to hold off Listing & Relisting until tomorrow. - This doesn't sound right to me either!
Other important information - As with all previous 'Free Selling' Promo's the Success fees are free for Basic Listings only, if you have any other listing charges like Ping, Afterpay, Optional & Promotional extra's to boost your listing placement, set a Reserve price, Specified your own listing end date/time or input a Subtitle etc. these fees are still charged - The Free Success Fees are capped at the Threshold of the first 100 New Listings including those relisted on the day of the Promo' - Beyond the first 100 Listings Threshold normal success fees apply Therefore if Listing item 101, 102, 103 ... sold we pay the full success fee on those. - The success fee discount is automatically applied to the first 100 as they are Listed/Relisted - Not as they are sold. - Cheers.

For anyone who uses My Products I activated x19 my listings earlier today and as I don't have Ping selected as a payment option on any of my products when they were activated no Ping payment was added to the listings so you are good to just list as normal if you use My Products and don't use Ping. If you are creating a new listing outside of My Products using the "Start a listing" option Ping is automatically selected and you can't remove it like in the screenshot below.

kat344 I also found that relisting on ones that didn't have ping previously HAVEN'T had ping forcefully added. I get the feeling that this will remove our eligibility for the fees free if they sell like this though.

Yes Shaun if you don't have Ping selected as a payment option you will have to pay a success fee if your listing sells I am ok with that as I don't offer Ping on any of my listings unless it is a expensive item where I can justify the 2.19% Ping fee.

Trademe support chat confirmed that my quick relisted items without ping DO have the fees free promotion applied even though ping wasn't force added.

Hmmm, disappointing to note that after I had listed an item, Ping was applied regardless of if I wanted it or not. There doesn't seem to be a back out or edit clause either. I feel like I've been scammed slightly today.

Dee you can withdraw your listing for free within the first hour of listing if it has been listed longer than an hour contact Trade Me using the live chat option and see if they will remove the listing for you at no charge then you can re-list it tomorrow without the Ping payment option.

Hi Dee, if Trade Me doesn't remove your listing for free, you could otherwise change your listing to close-off in a couple of days, and then relist it, but you may need to then untick the Ping box.
Or, if you decide to let the listing run, you could add in the details that you don't want payment by Ping, because of the extra charge, but just by internet-banking instead.

So every new item I listed today, as has cash, bank deposit, ping and afterpay as options. None were defaulted to just ping. I also relisted way more than my limit because I didn't realise your email hid that the "promotion" applies to the first 100 new listings only. Everything I listed new was after relisting a bunch of items I had on previously. Was over the moon when something sold for over $500 tonight just to be realise full fees apply as they chose Afterpay even though it was within my first 100 new listings but outside of 100 listings including relists. This has to be the scammiest promotion i've ever seen.

Kia Ora Dee,
Financially you will benefit by leaving Ping selected as your Payment option now that it's done - to edit to a shorter Listing time so the Listing closes sooner you are charged a fee, whilst this may only be $0.10cents, Listing your item anew tomorrow you will be subject to paying the full 7.9% success fee when the item sells as opposed to only paying the 2.19% Ping fee if the item sells in the first 7 days. - Cheers.

Hi S, when I shortened the end-date of one of my listings recently, I wasn't charged any fee at all, as I checked the fee summary first, to make sure that there was no charge, as it seems to be okay, for example, if you list an item on Sunday, then you can close it off on Tuesday for no charge.
Thank you for letting me know that casual sellers don't pay a Ping postage-fee, as I was not aware of that.

I can confirm when a Listing's scheduled end time is edited from a default of 7 days to shorten the end time to close a Listing sooner it incurs a fee of .25cents. - If a scheduled end time has already been charged the Listing end time can be edited again for No extra charge. - Cheers.
