new item defect after 45 days - how to resolve warranty issues?
AnsweredBought a new car radio that now, after 4 months, stopped working. Can I only claim repair or replacement within 45 days? Isn't there a minimum guarantee period for new products sold in NZ, like 6 months or a year?
Thanks

Hi Arne
In New Zealand (assuming this is a new item from an in-trade seller) you are covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act. This deliberately doesn't give any kind of time frames. That's impossible because obviously you would expect some items to last much longer than others. An item is meant to last it's "expected lifetime." For a car radio I would suggest that would be at least 12 months. Certainly more than 45 days.
First stop is the seller. You contact them, explain that the item has failed in a much shorter time-frame than expected, and invite them to remedy it.

Thank you Callum for clarifying. I've contacted the in-trade seller twice without getting a response. Why does Trademe limit the dispute option to 45 days? Now what? Cheers

After a certain time any purchase problem can only be remedied by the seller, not by trade me as a selling platform, used by the seller.
You can change your feedback to red and have a look at buyer protection and the disputes tribunal remedy in TM help if it is worth the money you paid. If you want to go this way a red face and an email stating you intend to take this further MIGHT prompt some action from the seller?

The seller does not respond to any email that I send. On his Trademe shop he claims 12 months warranty for products sold. It would be great if Trademe could at least try to contact the seller - this is what eBay does as you can contact a seller through the eBay platform but I don't seem to be able to contact the seller other than by direct email.

TradeMe doesn't allow you to post member usernames here on the messageboard, so you would be best to edit that out.
While there isn't a direct way to contact members on here like eBay you can of course ask them questions on their other items they are selling if they are unresponsive to emails.

Kia Ora Arne, I hope you've managed to obtain a resolve from the Seller by now. Considering the details you've provided - Trade me shop - In Trade - New radio - 12mth warranty on products sold - Is it possible this is a registered business company? If you think they may be you can look them up on the NZ Companies Register to obtain contact telephone number(s) and physical address. Just a heads up when you aren't getting any response via emailing and you are over the 45 days of Trade me's assistance. I do hope this is now resolved for you - Cheers.
