How do you verify that a Buy Now Purchase is genuine?
AnsweredHow do you verify that a Buy Now Purchase is genuine? I purchased an item using the Buy Now option. However several strange things have occurred:
- I've not received the usual Trademe email purchase confirmations with reference details, contact details etc. but rather a very general email congratulating me on my purchase that doesn't appear to be legit.
- This was followed by a similar email nudging me to see if I was still interested a Buy Now
- The seller reach out immediately with a very brief email, however with none of the usual references etc.
- Under my My Trade Me 'Won' section the item appears, however the Trade Me ref # is very unusual and does not follow the normal format. There are several other details missing.
- The purchase has not appeared in my banking portal like all other Trade Me purchases do for me to pay.
Once again what is frustrating is that its almost impossible to contact anyone at Trade Me. Thus this post.

Hi Andrew. There are some unusual things in what you say.
1. The general email you mention could be the seller's automatic Payment instructions email, but this should show as coming from Trademe. Check the email addresses in the email. If you have concerns you have received emails that don't appear legit, contact Trademe Trust & Safety team. If you go to Live chat and there is nobody there, you cane leave them a detailed message. Make sure to include any references you have that don't seem to match up.
2. Seems strange, as if you used Buy now, then of course you want to complete the transaction.
3. Best thing if the seller does not seem to match up is to email them from the link on your Trademe won item page which contains the sellers email address and ask them to clarify. Don't reply to direct emails unless you are absolutely certain the email address is exactly the Trademe email one as in your won items page.
4. What is the reference number? Most on Trademe have a listing number plus a reference number either a P and numbers Pxxxxxxxxx or a KP-xxxx
5. I have never heard of any purchases appearing in a banking portal. What bank is this with?

Yes! a few anomalies there,
New Listings coming through the upgraded TradeMe system have a reference number starting with KP- XXXXXX
TradeMe staff can screen the Listing for you,
To contact TradeMe staff through "Live Chat" for assistance, If you select the Contact us Link at the very bottom of any TradeMe page the Chat Tab will Pop up in blue at the bottom right of your landing page screen. - Enter in the Chat bot which comes up once opened in a New conversation - Talk to person - and you are taken to entering a few details before arriving at the window to Chat with a Real Person/Staff. - Enter your Listing number in the window here enabling staff to pull it up readily.The Live Chat manned hours weekdays are 8:00am - 5:30pm and weekends 9:30am - 4:pmI have just been through the live Chat & can Confirm staff are there right now - if you have any trouble with the Chat screen Log out & resume a New Chat session. - Cheers.0 -
Well I tried to do a buy now twice, and both times the page closed while I was trying to enter my phone number - I have no idea if I bought something or not! Twice. The Live Chat link is a joke ... Artificial Stupidity is more like it. "change my email" indeed.

Kia ora Peter, that's so frustrating you're having trouble using the Buy Now on the listing. If you go onto live chat and ask to "talk to a person", someone can look into this for you.
