GST Reg'd Sellers with NZ Post - have you had a recent compensation?
AnsweredSo short story, if as a GST registered seller you've had a recent compensation from NZ Post, you have probably found they did not pay you the GST due to their new policy not to.
I'm just wondering if there is anybody here who has run that past thier accountant or IRD yet and what they had to say on the legality of the matter?
My aggregator even requests an invoice made out to them for the supplies which they pay via credit note when the claim is paid... but without GST.
It just doesn't seem legal to me to decide that GST doesn't apply to you even though it would for anybody else, and did for the original purchaser.

Looks like nobody has run in to the problem yet James and no reply in your same post from 3 months ago either.
GST Reg NZ Post shipping traders, how are you handling new compensation regime? – Help - Trade Me
Might be worth emailing your accountant and/or IRD and ask what the best way is to handle it with the way you do your accounting and returns.

Yes, this first claim under the new rule is so small that I'm reluctant to poke the IRD hornets nest over a couple bucks. Now the aggregator has just amended the credit to be the full inclusive amount anyway, I don't think they quite know what to do either.
Seems I am the only person questioning it, expect nobody else cares or just assumes NZ Post must know what they are doing (I don't have quite so much faith).

Yeah, realistically it's probably not worth the bother and I imagine IRD have better things to do than worry about the odd couple of $ for how infrequently this would happen. It would seem strange though to have 1 sale and then collect GST for the IRD on the original sale, then GST again from NZ Post when they recompense you.

Yeah but not everyone is gst registered. If anyone inccurs a lost for a lost parcel, how do they legally say we decide to not pay the gst on the item we lost? This policy applies to everyone including non businesses
