I have bought an expensive item but the only payment option is Bank Transfer
Hi there,
I've purchased a pricy item probably the most expensive one($6000) that I have bought from here. However, I feel very insecure transferring money via bank transfer as I need to get it shipped.
I tried to look for Trademe policy and it seems like Trademe would only be able to provide some sort of protection only when the payment is made with Ping or Afterpay.
The seller has 44 positive feedback on buying only and address verified but still a bit suspicious as his email doesn't show up anywhere on google also.
Would you please advise me on a solution for this?
Thank you,

Well really you should have checked payment options before buying the item, as the seller would have specified, I personally don't accept ping payments on larger sales as the fees are costly. Your choices are to proceed with a bank deposit or renege on the sale.

If it's something you are going to pickup then what you can do is to email the seller and say you would like to ensure your money goes to their account so would like to pay $10 and have the seller then confirm they received it. At the same time ask for their address and phone number to collect from. Once you have their address you can investigate the address and name of the person online to see if anything flags up. You could also phone them and gauge them based on the phone call.
While none of this is foolproof, it might allay your fears, or not, before you transfer the balance.
You can also contact your bank and ask for their advice.
Whoops, just read you need it shipped. No harm in asking for address anyway.

Yes, as Gary says for the purchases that I feel I need to be cautious I sometimes request a pickup address and phone number and then say "Sorry can't make it will go for shipping instead." Having those extra contact details can help if things do go wrong.
Bank accounts are actually very safe in New Zealand. What I mean by that is that the owner of the bank account will be the owner. Pretty hard to open an account with false details. So it's a simple process for Police or whoever to link that bank account with the person in the unlikely event things go wrong.
Do remember that there are compensation limits of $2000 for couriers. So if that $6k item gets lost or damaged, that's a lot for the seller to have to wear. Is pick-up truly not an option?
