Rural Post
AnsweredI bought an item from trade me today, and the seller had 1 shipping price of $13.40. No mention as to whether it was for a local delivery or NZ wide. I selected it and paid my money. They came back to me asking for the extra $4.80 as I live rural. I have paid it, but my issue is that the postage was set on the listing and therefore if it costs more should the seller be able to come back and demand more money? Their point was that because I live rural I should know to add $5. my view is, trade me providers a number of tools to enable the seller to calculate to the cost of shipping to give a fairly accurate idea of cost.

Hi Debbie,
In this case you bid agreeing to shipping on Auction and formed a Contract when you bid or used the Buy now,
It is sellers responsibility to have correct shipping on their auction including Rural shipping costs,
as some sellers have a flat rate which includes rural, so your point of view, it could have been a flat rate
as no mention of Rural at all?,
If seller does not make it clear they cannot come back and ask for more,
They should have Urban Shipping and & Rural Shipping too, which they did not,
Seller needs to think about their own actions and their error, Seller is wrong,
I even saw a feedback with this issue, Trade Me removed sellers negative feedback on buyer as they were wrong as did not have correct shipping with rural on their auction, They cannot change the conditions of auction once it has been won,
if sellers errs, they need to cover the cost and learn from their mistake,

Yes, Debbie. That's what flossy is saying. If it doesn't mention that the shipping was extra for rural, then there is no need to pay more. Some of us don't charge extra for rural for most things and it's only $2.50 extra when using Pass the Parcel, so not a biggie.
As long as you have paid what it said on the auction, then you have done everything right. The seller should have had a different delivery cost for rural if that's what they wanted to do, so hopefully they have learned from their mistake.

I don't know why most or at least more people don't use Pass the Parcel. Especially those who live urban. I have seen some diabolical rural charges that Im absolutely sure are not charges set by the couriers. For example $5.90 for Auckland, and $17+ for rural NI shipping for the same parcel. That's daylight robbery. Some traders look like they're deliberately making money on rural charges. It p***s me off. Pass the Parcel charges $2.50 extra for any size rural parcel. That's pretty fair. Why dont sellers use them? I always ask.

How well do you know your shipping rates?, how the system works etc.
Across town rates within Auckland/ Christchurch/ Wellington etc. up to 25kg's are very cheap
Aramex $5.59 NZ Post $7.00, Non Rural
Shipping within Island, costs a lot more, and shipping rural $17 yes would be right depending on size of parcel,
Sellers are also entitled to add a couple of dollars to cover packaging etc.
Most Couriers have to pass their rural parcels over to NZ post to deliver, this costs, they have to pay NZ post to deliver them,
their Rural charges are probably what NZ post charges them, logistics behind the scenes etc. hence why rural charges can be higher, high fuel costs etc.
As for pass the parcel, depending on size of urban parcel and bags, using the other couriers are more viable and cheaper,
as they have cheaper bag rates than pass the parcel, pass the parcel do not have a large variety of bag sizes,
Some people cannot be bothered using them just for rural, too much fluffing around, and stick to our standard couriers,
I for one as a buyer hate them, they do not deliver bags to doors, just dumped in Letter boxes, years ago had a run of them losing my parcels, and will actually avoid sellers using them if item likely to be sent in a bag,
and it really irks me when people try and push the service onto others,
Some sellers have different circumstances, what is good for one may not be good for the other,
I just stick using The Trade Me book a courier as a seller, it suits me fine,
What gets me is sellers having a nationwide urban rate of $15 for standard size box, when that is twice the across town rate,
and will not refund the difference?, now that is daylight robbery, as very excessive,

Actually, I know my rates pretty well being a seller myself, and a buyer. Hence the reason I get pretty hacked off with rip off sellers. The example you used with Aramex and NZpost, PTP would be around the same up to 25kg, but quote me the rural NI charge for 25kg and then compare... PTP leaves them both in the dust on price, within the same island, only $2.50 more, where Aramex and NZpost are hugely expensive. You need to take out a 2nd mortgage. I know which I would prefer to pay, and which I would prefer to charge someone buying off me. Shipping should not be a money maker for the seller either.
There is no excuse to rip people off especially when the difference can be $10-$20 or more for a parcel the same size and weight over different carriers. If I can help someone buying something off me, to save $10+ on shipping I absolutely will. I guess I'm not lazy that way (and I live rural so it's an extra effort but that's the kind of person I am).
I've had plenty of buyers ask me if I use Aramex, to please not because of shite service in their area. So I guess like you say, what is good for one may not be good for the other. Over many years I have had no problems with PTP, which is more than I say for some others I won't mention, so I will absolutely remain loyal to them with their great service, excellent rural rates, not to mention same price up to 25kg (instead of incremental weight jumps) for any size parcel. And I will continue to ask sellers to use them if possible, when I see ridiculously high courier rates for something I might want to buy. Fortunately, most people I've bought off have been happy to oblige. Some have been astounded by the savings. Cool aye?
I don't work for PTP but I tell anyone who's interested, (sellers) about them so they can choose to check them out if they wish, because why wouldn't you do something nice for someone else which in turn saves other people their hard-earned cash, just because you can.
oh, and I never charge for packaging. Recycling all the way. I avoid sellers that do. There is no need for it these days. Charging for tape, packing, and gas to go to the post office is taking the ...... lol even though they might think they're 'entitled'.
anyway, have a great day. Obviously, we will agree to disagree on the complex topic of shipping. But will agree on everyone getting their parcels delivered safely who ever delivers them. :)

I would like to use pass the parcel more except that they only accept parcels with printed address labels. As I don't have a home printer to print labels this makes them a far less convenient option for me to use. Otherwise I would love to use them. I like to offer the best price to buyers as naturally this is something that people take into account when considering if they will opt to bid on or purchase an item so more affordable prices would generally support an increased likelihood of the sale of items.
Tracey people 'might think they're entitled' to charge for these additional costs because they are entitled! Just as buyers are entitled to then consider this factor when they are deciding if they will choose to go ahead and bid or otherwise purchase on a listing. If I have doubts on this or am in some way unhappy as a potential buyer I may choose to use the listing q&a to enquire further. At times I have requested alternative shipping options from sellers for various reasons including price point amongst others but people (as far as I can recall) have been obliging with my enquiry or request. If they were not and it still didn't seem right to me it's very unlikely upon principle alone that I would continue on in my endeavours towards purchasing from them.
I find I am much less likely to bid on a listing that I would need shipping on when there are no quotes provided. Every time that I have done so previously without first requesting an indication of the shipping fees I have kicked myself for not first enquiring due to the end pricing being much higher than I was thinking it would be. When I didn't bother to enquire prior to bidding on a listing and it does seem highly priced it just has to serve as the cost of the reminder to myself to always seek a quote prior to committing to buy!
