What defines a seller being a professional trader
AnsweredIf I see a seller who has purchased a musical instrument that I bid on and lost, and then two days later he has listed the instrument for sale for more than three times what he paid, should he be listed as a trader or just a seller? Is there a different type of listing for people who do this? Thanks for any help.

If he does it repeatedly then he should be classed as a trader and refer to himself as 'in-trade'.. If it is a one-off because he didn't like the instrument or some other reason then he is just a casual seller.

If you make, buy or obtain goods with the intention of selling them, you are In Trade.
Trademe's definition here..
and there is a link there to the Fair Trading Act there.

And then I go back to his site and note that he is in fact listed as In Trade! Oh well. Thanks for the info. I now know what type of bidders to watch out for.

Nothing wrong with a little healthy competition. :)

I guess so Yvonne. I don't mine competing with someone else who is buying an instrument to play it. As an idealist I wish there were a place where people could buy items without competing with traders, but I am way too naive it seems in these matters. Thanks again for your feedback.

"he has listed the instrument for sale for more than three times what he paid" ... an opportunist and a dreamer, but good fortune if he can triple his investment. I'm holding musical instruments that I bought here cheaply, which reverb and ebay said were 4 times more valuable than the buy-now. You need to be certain they are genuine, be the right brand, and be quick.

Well you are right Gyro. He has not sold it yet at that price. Let's see

My username is listed in trade, even though I’m not. I don’t meet any of TM’s criteria for being in trade. I have a second account and TM told me one of them has to be in trade. Most bizarre.

Why would you need 2 accounts though? Maybe, simply because of that?

I used to have a business selling. I closed it down a few years ago now. So I had an account for that.
I do sell items from my Crown Lynn collection on TM though. I’m definitely NOT in trade with those, TM tried to say I was, probably because of the amount I was selling. I’d decided to catalogue my collection and get it valued for insurance. Then I decided to sell some as I went along.
My brain likes to keep things separate. So, I don’t want to sell clothes, Crown Lynn and my husband’s scaffolding on one account. None of that selling is in trade or a business
