How does PING work when you combine items for shipping?
Do you get charged the PING fee for shipping on each item/each auction even though you have combined the items to send as one parcel so the actual shipping cost is nowhere near as much as the sum of the multiple quoted shipping costs?

Yes you do. You need to do a ping refund of the overcharged amount and the ping fee will also get refunded

Kia Ora g14us,
Yes! if you don't have an option of $0.00 for combined shipping purchases, lesser shipping option for Buyers to select or Seller to advise combined shipping for multi purchases, the full shipping amount selected on purchase has the Ping fee applied. It's fairly quick & easy to refund overpaid shipping via Ping and your overall portion charged matching the refunded amount is automatically repaid to your TM account However for Buyers seeing a larger outlay of payable shipping cost initially can often be put off purchasing more items from the onset therefore it's a good idea to add a combined option to your shipping section on your Listings. - Cheers.

Thanks for your input. Trouble is what you are suggesting no doubt works if your shipping cost is the same for each listing. But my listings might have shipping of say $6.50 for one listing but $9.50 for another. So saying no extra cost for multiple purchases or even just $1 extra for each extra item just wouldn't work. Where do I put "seller to advise combined shipping for multiple purchases" which is what I need?. Can I have that in the shipping details but with no dollar value attached to it?

Kia Ora g14us,
Yes! you select to 'specify shipping costs' on the Shipping & Pick up page - Cost is a required field therefore enter 0.00 - though this doesn't work with adding courier calculated costs, you would have to enter the calculated costs manually within the specified costs section.

Kia ora g14us, AJ and S have given good advice about refunding any extra shipping (and your fees being refunded), you could also consider adding a line to your listing descriptions for buyers to select shipping per item and that you'll refund any overpaid shipping for combined postage so buyers know it's an option.
