shipping valuables safely
NZ Post cover lost items up to $250, NZ Couriers up to $500 and Aramex up to $2,000 if I read them correctly. So how do I ship a small item of jewellery worth much more than these limits, without losing bigtime when it gets lost in transit (which seems to happen all too often in my neck of the woods)?

If you read NZ Posts Terms and Conditions, you are not allowed to send Jewellery (excluding Costume).

And yet, NZ Post (Courier Post) carry gold bullion for businesses without any issue:
"MyGold® offers fully insured overnight signature-required courier throughout New Zealand. Rural areas may take an extra day for delivery. Orders are shipped via Courier Post and are sent to the nearest depot for collection."

If your item is valued at over $2000 chriscameron you can encourage your buyer to collect it, see if you can get additional insurance from your courier, or ask a local jeweller to send on your behalf. They may have organised a higher rate of cover on their account that you can piggyback on.

Not quite correct there thepiercedkiwi. But many get it wrong. Jewellery is perfectly fine with NZPost courier. And covered for upto $2000

Kia Ora,
If you go through the Gosweetspot company they can walk you through applying for additional coverage of sending jewellery via NZ Post above the $2,000.

No James. Incorrect. You can see on that page it has an asterisk after it. If you follow that asterisk you will see.
As I say many get it wrong. Jewellery, under a threshold of $2000, and packed within guidelines is NOT prohibited as long as you are sending via courier. Which pretty much everything is sent using these days. Including Book a Courier on here. You don't need to get written confirmation either.

Yes Chris, individual companies can arrange a higher level of cover directly with NZPost. Likewise I can send Dangerous Goods with the correct paperwork, packaging, and labelling that you wouldn't be able to send. It's all part of my account that was agreed on when I opened it with NZPost.
That's why it's worth approaching a jeweller if you do have a high value piece to send. They might agree to send it through them.
