Hi Ian. Easy answer here. You don't. It is the sellers responsibility to pay for return postage for a faulty or mis-described item.
Not only is this a Trade Me policy, it is the law. No wriggling out of it.
Here is the relevant section of the Trade Me Buyer Protection Policy.

Return shipping
If your item needs return shipping
We expect:
- Not-as-described items to be returned to the seller.
- The seller to cover the cost of return shipping in these situations.
- The buyer and seller to work together in good faith, to get the item returned.
- Return shipping to be tracked. For items over $250, return shipping must be sent via 'signature required' courier.
Items should be returned in the same condition as when you received it. Except if the problem wouldn't be discoverable without using the item.- Cheers.0
