Find out what Ping is and what happens when you use it as a buyer or a seller.

Ping is Trade Me’s secure way for members to make payments safely and get paid instantly. Find out what happens when you use Ping as a buyer and as a seller.

What’s Ping

Ping is Trade Me’s built-in card payment system that all members have access to in their Trade Me account.

Think of it like a virtual wallet, where you can pay for stuff on Trade Me without the hassle of exchanging bank details or waiting for payments to clear.

Using Ping as a buyer

When you choose to pay for an item with Ping:

  • You pay the seller immediately when you Buy Now or win an auction.
  • You can choose to pay with a debit card, a credit card, or money already in your Ping balance.
  • The seller gets your payment right away, so they can send your item or give it to you faster.
  • As a buyer, you can feel confident about what you buy. If you pay using Ping, Buyer Protection covers you up to $2,500. This means if your item doesn't arrive, isn't like the description, or is broken, you're protected.

Ping is available for purchases up to $25,000.

Using Ping as a seller

Offering Ping as a payment option means:

  • Buyers pay right away when they buy your item or win your auction. They also feel safe because Ping payments can get Buyer Protection.
  • We take a small Ping fee of 2.19% from the total amount the buyer pays (including shipping).
  • When a buyer pays, the money goes into your Ping balance. You can then transfer this money to your New Zealand bank account or use it to buy other things on Trade Me.
  • As a seller, you rest assured that you’re getting paid safely and quickly.

From Monday 3 November, new listings from in-trade sellers will exclusively use Ping, with cash and Afterpay as optional additions.
