Kia Ora Ashlin,
I agree, upsetting Bidder(s) just to load new photo's doesn't make a hang of a lot of sense when the odds of losing the Bidder(s) is the cost of a Sale!
Rather than upsetting Bidders by removing their bid(s) just to add these new photo's contact TradeMe Staff through "Live Chat" for assistance in uploading the photo's for you. - I can't guarantee they will though it is worthwhile requesting.
If you select the Contact us Link at the bottom of any TM page the Chat Tab will Pop up in blue at the bottom right of your landing page screen, there may be a slight delay in this appearing.Enter in the Chat bot which comes up once the Chat icon is selected - Talk to person - you will be taken to entering your details before arriving at the window to Chat with a Real Person/Staff.The Live Chat manned hours weekdays are 9:30:am - 5:00pm and weekends 9:30am - 4:pmAll the Best - Cheers.0 -

Just edited my auction with a bid.
Photo added OK via standard method (Desktop)
Photo added OK using My Products (Desktop)
On app (ios) I got an error message "For External Reference ID You cannot change the External Reference ID on an auction that has bids"

That testing from Callum provides even more reason for you to contact TradeMe staff direct, with others able to use the Desktop site to add photo's to Listings which have Bids on them perhaps the setting which is taking you to the Error 500 page requires an adjustment directing you correctly there.
The Help files don't differentiate between the Desktop site & the Apps therefore this is possibly a known issue within the Apps, if not it would be a Bug worth reporting for a fix resolve - Cheers.

In addition to the advice from S. if the problem you are having has been there for years, it could be a browser issue for you Ashlin. 500 errors are never helpful on Trade Me, they don't say what the problem is. Quite often they can be due to a cache issue. So in addition to, or before, contacting Trade Me you might like to try clearing cache and cookies and try to upload a photo again on desktop.
