How can two people win one listing?
AnsweredI sold an item to a buyer who did not contact me. I applied for a success fees refund and offered the item to watchers. A watcher accepted my offer and paid by Ping. I saw that the original buyer also paid by ping only a few hours earlier. How can Trade Me allow two people to buy one item? I can refund ping fees but fingers crossed that I don't get into an argument over who won the item!

The usual process when an initial buyer doesn't make contact Paul is to try several times to make contact and place feedback. If a week or 2 has gone by and nothing is heard, apply for a success fee refund at which time Trademe emails the buyer and they have 3 days to confirm they will be completing. If that doesn't happen and the buyer ignores the email from Trademe and the 3 days are up, they refund the success fees at which time Trademe say the trade will not be going ahead. You are then free to send out an FPO. If that is accepted and paid, then they are the new owner. If the original buyer then pays by Ping, just refund them via Ping, send them an email confirming that's what you have done and why, and it's all finished.

I sent a reminder email to the original buyer after 5 days. After another 4 days, I still hadn't heard from the buyer so requested a success fee refund and sent out the offer. It appears that the buyer paid as soon as they received the email from Trade Me. I didn't expect them to pay since they didn't reply to my email or the Trade Me payment instructions but I guess I should have waited before sending out the offer. I have told the original buyer that their Ping payment came through just before the other one and the item is theirs. Why does Trade Me allow a second Ping payment after the item has already been paid for? I hope this loophole can be closed to avoid this happening to other sellers.

Hi Paul, sounds like you were nice and patient with the buyer and handled things well. The only glitch was not waiting for the success fee refund before sending out the FPO. It happens quite often that the last resort email from Trademe brings the buyer to action. I'm not actually sure if the system refuses to accept a Ping payment after a fee refund has been made as I always wait for the fee refund to be processed before doing an FPO if it's a one off item. Usually, 15% of my sales are by FPO, but in most cases I have more than 1 of something anyway, so it wouldn't be a problem. Maybe someone else or TM can confirm if the system blocks a subsequent Ping payment being made after a fee refund is granted.
