Buy Now but turns out buyers account disabled

I would imagine Paula that the account was disabled after they used Buy Now but before you looked. They may have used buy now on a whole lot of items and this may have triggered a Trademe response to disable their account. Hopefully you contacted Trademe and applied to get your success fee refunded.

A possibility is a persistent attempted scam that is around. A hacked or new account buys up large amounts of items on Trade Me. They have no intention of really paying for them. This is the freight forwarding scam. Traditionally it has been focused on vehicles but now they are branching out into general goods as well. I can't post the link that Trade Me has to explain it as the messageboard doesn't like it and marks my post as pending.
It is possible you will get an email from Trade Me warning you. Even if they don't, you might now get emails from an address not linked to the original buyer asking if they can pay for the item. Delete those and don't engage.
