Sold car buyer hasn't changed rego

What I always do is make the new owner do the transfer online before they drive away. They just need their drivers licence, address, and a credit or debit card for the fee.
However as long as you have done your part and informed Waka Kotahi that you have sold the car you SHOULD be OK. However you do need their name and address to do that. If you made a mistake and didn't get those from the buyer things could be a little more tricky........

Kia Ora Pete,
- How do you know this? - Have you received the rego notification?
- Did you & your Buyer complete Change of ownership forms?
- Did you obtain your Buyer's address?
If you haven't Changed ownership but have your Buyer's address you can enter the Sale notification through Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (nzta.govt.nz) thereby all notifications will go direct to your Buyer as 'Last known address' and you are released from that ownership.
If you haven't Changed ownership and don't have your Buyer's address this is what you need to obtain from them so you can update Waka Kotahi - Otherwise if you can show a Bank Payment for purchase of the vehicle which states Purchase of the vehicles registration number and your Buyer's name Waka Kotahi can investigate this - without either name or rego no investigation proceeds - the statement has to show both!
All the Best - Cheers.

Had this happen to me , but it was only 3 months , got a ticket , speed camera , learnt the hard way , tried contacting new owner without success , solution? Paid the fine , then I deregistered the vehicle making it practically worthless , you dont need to hand in the plates , I just said vehicle was towed to a wreckers for destruction with the plates , now if the new owner gets any more tickets they stay in no mans land effectively going no where
the police will pull them over eventually and pink sticker the vehicle ordering it off the road
They will never be able to register the vehicle without a compliance check effectively putting it in their name

Lol. That's a good one to tuck away for future reference Scott. You'll be able to track when it happens too by checking the plate on carjam or similar.
But yes, these days I don't let a vehicle go unless the change of ownership is done there and then. Or you can instead take a photo of new owners licence. If you have this along with their name and address you can complete the buyer part yourself if they drag the chain doing it.

Callum, - you don't need the Buyer's driver licence to change ownership online at Waka Kotahi, you only need full name of New Owner and their address - Cheers.

Yes, if you are the seller that is all you need. But if you have the licence details you can also complete the buyers obligations for them if they seem not willing to do it. It's also good extra security. In the event that whatever name or address the buyer gives you is fake.

Cheers, I've just done this with Waka Kotahi twice - you don't need to complete Buyer's details if you've done the Sale side online - that's all you need to do. I actually rang them for confirmation which they gave and I have received 2 letters last week letting me know I have no further responsibility to the vehicles even though they could confirm the New owner hasn't done Change of ownership Or registration - whatever address you give as the Buyer's is the Last known address, there's no come back on the Seller - Cheers 😊
