Computer parts, anti-static bags, photos of your product and carpet.
All new computer parts come in an anti-static bag. Static can cause your computer parts to have faults.
The friction from walking on carpet creates static charges.
If you remove a working computer part and clean it up for ready for photos. Do not use carpet as your photo background. You may have just created a fault on your computer part by doing this.
If you took photos of your computer part on carpet, listed it and sold it. Then the buyer says it's not working properly. Don't say 'It was working in my PC', think on it, retrace your extraction, cleaning and phototaking process, slap that forehead and remember 'that's why all new computer parts come in an anti-static bag'.
Way, way, way to many computer parts listed at the moment that have been photoed on the sellers carpet.

I concur, as a computer technician, this is very annoying to see.
There is one trader on Trademe that is videoing their computer parts and they do keep their parts in antistatic bags. They have links to videos of them in their auctions, so there still are some out there that do care, amongst the many careless ones. Great you mentioned it David!

Kia Ora All,
As static from carpets affects computer parts being sold should this caution be stipulated within the side banner menu under the TM Listing policies & restrictions section - This may only be a known fact to those within the Business sector rather than more widely known by the Casual Seller & Buyer. - How could this reach the wider audience here? - Cheers.

Remember too, it only applies to synthetic carpets, not wool carpets that do not conduct static electricity.

While synthetic carpets are less susceptible to static electricity compared to other materials, they can still carry a static charge under certain conditions. Just the same as certain plastics can also generate static electricity. That's why it is important to use antistatic bags instead of general plastic bags, especially when dealing with sensitive items that require protection from static charges. A clean hard antistatic surface like an antistatic mat or plastic, even wood, stone or tiles surface is better to use if you want to take a photo of your electronics.

Actually, synthetic carpets are MORE susceptible to build up static electricity compared to wool, but anyway, yes a good idea to use anti-static bags and to make sure you are discharged to earth before handing electronics. Taps are handy for that as they are usually earthed well. I'm always getting shocks off taps, door knobs and cars, as the static build up rushes to earth.
We used to make tens of 1,000 of litres of anti static coating that was incorporated in the backing of carpet for aeroplanes, where static build up could be rather a problem. We also made a similar coating for the inside of boxes for the packing of hard discs in many of the HD plants in Malaysia and Thailand.
