I am having trouble with the buyer. She is applying extortion tactics
Trade Me
I had a Leather Reclining Chair $1495 for sale, buyer bought the chair and footstool using Ping. Saturday 1 August the couple came and spent 1/2 hour checking and trying out the Recliner and subsequently left with the chair and stool.
4th August Since then they have said the chair is uncomfortable to sit in for longer than 10-15 minutes. They took the chair to Danske Moblier who said the chair was more than 10 years old and would have no warranty (I not knowing how old the chair was said it was about 4-5 years.) The woman asked for a money refund with NO return of the chair. I offered a full refund by Friday 7th on the return the Chair and stool in the same condition as when they took them.
Then the EXTORTION started.
I was to pay them $1,735 which includes the going rate for delivery both ways OR alternatively they would keep the recliner for a partial refund of $1,100 so they could get it reupholstered. (It was beautiful chair that didn't need anything done)
I again said to return the chair by Friday in the same condition you took it and I will REFUND the money BUT NO returning of the chair.
Later that day they said that they were having the chair reupholstered and would opt for a partial refund of $1100 keeping the Recliner.
Still asking for a refund amount $1,100
Today 9th August there was an email. quote
' WE NEED YOU TO AGREE TO REFUND US THE $1,100 TODAY SO THIS CAN BE RESOLVED NOW, OTHERWISE WE WILL HAVE TO GO AND LODGE A COMPLAINT WITH TRADE ME '
Trade Me please let the buyers know that EXTORTION is an illegal practice and Trade Me does not support this.
The buyers refuse to return the chair and are still wanting me to refund them the amount of $1,100.
Yours faithfully
Judy

Firstly, Im sorry to hear of how this buyer is treating you.
Note that this is a community forum for members to help each other, its not a platform to communicate to trademe. The best way to go is click the blue bubble speech box at the bottom of the page.
To address your issue, i think you have gone above and beyond by offering a full refund for return. As they inspected and took away they have accepted the purchase fully. If the chair has some faults, then sure a refund on return may be appropriate. But if they dont like it cause its uncomfortable to them is a "change of mind" return and this is totally upto the seller to decide if they want to return and refund - ie its not required. And yes, it must be returned prior to full refund.
Based on their behaviour (and I think we have all dealt with someone like them), I would not be offering anything any more. Yes you may get a dispute lodged against you, dont stress about it as you have all your comms offering a more than appropriate response which trademe will take into account.

Do NOT pay they $1100, and if they wish to go to Trade Me to open a dispute, encourage it. Common sense tells me Trade Me will find in your favour if everything you are saying is correct.
The only sticky point might be you saying it was 4-5 years old, and it's actually 10. If that's correct it could be grounds for the buyer to return for a refund. But you have already said you are happy to do that. So no issues there......
By the way. There is only a 2 year warranty from DM for fabrics so them saying it's out of warranty is true even it if was 4 or 5 years old. The 10 year warranty only covers structural elements of the chair.
