Is it safe to pay for a deposit?

I'm about to buy a dog but they are asking for a deposit (quite big), so I'm scared that I pay the deposit but it turns out to be a scam. How can I protect my deposit? I think thr Buyers protection doesn't apply on animals. Thanks

Buyer Protection applies to eligible purchases paid for by Ping or Afterpay only, internet Bank transfers & cash deposits are not covered.

To secure your Deposit ensure there is a written/typed agreement between your Seller & yourself which clearly states the Terms of the deposit. - The Seller's feedback status will help confirm the integrity of the Sale. It's fairly common practice for a Seller of Animals to request a Holding Deposit for the sale. - Cheers.

Always, always check their feedback. Get their address prior to making the deposit. If you can, try googling them to see if you can find out anymore information. If they are a small seller, there might not be anything.
