Trademe incorrectly charging GST
Has anyone else had Trademe add GST onto their ping bill when purchasing from overseas? Trademe states it deducts GST from the seller, not charges the buyer. I've had a long running issue that I'm assured "the tech team is looking into", but with almost two weeks since I raised it... nothing.

Hello Joshua. I'm curious why you think you shouldn't be charged GST? Trade Me, like all other larger retailers do this. Amazon, eBay, Temu, etc are required to collect GST at point of purchase and return this to the NZ Govt. It is the buyer who pays the GST, not the seller. Or do you mean something else?

Hi Callum - you’re somewhat incorrect - Trademe is meant to display the GST inclusive price for international sellers, it’s not meant to be added on after the sale (my initial post doesn't make this overly clear sorry). Here is an excerpt from their own explanation:
International sellers will provide us with a GST exclusive item price and a GST exclusive shipping price, then NZ GST of 15% will be added by us. This GST inclusive price is what Kiwi buyers will see on listings. Sellers will receive the GST exclusive price less our fees. What I’ve had happen is they have added the GST on after the sale which they themselves agree is incorrect… they just don’t seem to want to fix it.

Yes, I'm still a bit confused I have to admit. So are you saying you purchased an item from an international seller with a displayed price of say $10 + $5 shipping = $15 , yet you were charged $15 + 15% = $17.25?

Correct - I purchased an item for $790 + Postage from an international seller. Trademe have then sent me an invoice for $908.50 + Postage. I've raised this with them and have been advised it's "being looked at by their tech team". However, after waiting almost two weeks with near daily follow-ups on my part, I'm very much wondering if it's being looked into at all. Hence, I'm keen to know if others are experiencing the same bug or if it's an isolated event (which might explain their lack of urgency in finding a fix).

Ahh I see. No I haven't heard of anyone else experiencing that one. It would probably be all over here if it was more widespread so I would guess isolated. Good to hear they are checking it out, but you are right that they could be a bit more proactive with telling you what is going on.
Did you already pay the increased amount? If so they should refund the difference while they are working on it.

Honestly, I'm not certain they are checking it out - Most of my chats with the chat-box customer service team are cut off by the team before they answer my questions... I guess it's been put into the "too hard basket".
I've not paid for the coin as Trademe asked me to hold off until it was fixed. However, as you can imagine the seller is very much wanting the trade completed and the sale will likely fall through due to the inaction of "the tech team". It's a real shame as I've been after the coin for a very long time and they almost never come up for sale in New Zealand.
What should have been a simple trade has cost me hours of my life trying to get resolved - But as you say, it doesn't appear to be widespread... Hence Trademe don't seem to worry.
