Are Police truncheons considered weapons on Trade Me?
AnsweredOver the years, I have brought several dozen truncheons on Trademe. Now I see none.
Have they been listed as ilegal now?
Thanks

Hi Piotr. According to the Listing restrictions, yes, quite likely.

Thanks Callum - Seems crazy - I'm more likely to look to a softball bat as weapon versus an antique Edwardian police truncheon. Thanks for you help.

Yes, there are other examples of issues like this. Plenty of antique items that would probably reach a good home with a collector and never be misued are banned. Unfortunately I guess they have to draw the line somewhere, or it would become too difficult to assess every individual listing.

Yup it's a fine line - for instance https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/marketplace/antiques-collectables/militaria/swords/listing/4440056804 it's even called "Awesome Tribal Ethnic Type Dagger Knife Fighting Weapon Short Sword" seems normal but trying to sell a 1970's riot baton is considered restricted. I'd hate to be th one making these decisions.

The whole situation around weapons is an inconsistent mess on this page, they have a section for daggers, but you cannot sell an European style dagger, it is doubled edged - an African one or a Javanese one, those seem fine, I can also quite happily list an oyster knife, those are double edged.
I wouldn't be surprised if one of the staff randomly decided that truncheons were not ok, but you could probably list a Shillelagh and be fine.

a search of Baton brings up all manner of face reconstructing devices , the "emergency baton torch " is a particular oddity , like I need a torch and something to crack heads , like really?
then there's the "telescopic training baton" , training for what I wonder ? a marching band on the frontline?
