Selling NZ handmade products on Trade Me
Please I am in a bit of a quandary as to selling handmade products of NZ woods Pendants Hairpins etc., but because of the downturn of the economy buyers are concentrating more on essential things, and I too am in the same boat. But now that Spring is on its way produce SHOULD BECOME CHEAPER giving the opportunity to splash out to buy that nick-nack. But to my horror, Trademe is allowing overseas products to sell here in NZ at prices that I feel are very unreasonable and even more so that they are machine-made, so we now find it very difficult to compete in a very small market, remembering Australia has also created a good market through homemade jewelry products but their population being larger than ours can sustain it and we can also help to keep their market alive due to fashion changes. Do members agree with this and if so how best to improve our image on TRADEME to support local craftsmen? with locally grown woods? as this is a chance to re-establish a home craft industry again. Cheers Bill

Hi Billy. Most buyers are now aware that they can filter out (most of) the direct overseas sellers.
But people have been asking for years for a New Zealand made category or filter on Trade Me.
That might be a way to help you if Trade Me came to the party there. I guess the problem is defining what is New Zealand made, and policing it if it did become a category or filterable option.
I have heard of some people having success on etsy or with their own websites and facebook pages for their handmade items. Likewise with local markets etc. I know it doesn't have the reach of Trade Me but you could consider those as well if you are not already.
