I am wondering - if a product is listed on Trademe by a New Zealand seller and is coming to me from Australia (value is around $1500) should they tell me that I might have to pay GST before it can be delivered to me?

You are Buying from an NZ Seller, if they are GST Registered this will be included in the Asking/Sale price.
