If you have mentioned the fault it your auction, and you genuinely didnt know what the fault was, then I think you are correct - the buyer was aware it had the fault when purchased it. It's totally upto the buyer to ascertain what would be required to fix it. When buying anything with a fault, you work on the basis of total cost, what it cost to buy and what it costs to fix = total. If this total is more than buying a car without the fault, you'd look elsewhere and buy without the fault. The easiest way to solve this is to have the postage amounts listed in your auction, so they can include it in their ping payment. Depending on the size of the item, I have a local price, north island price and south island price - and then one of each for RD or non RD. This wont suit everyone/item, but its a good option to consider

Unless its low value, Ive always asked for the item to be returned first before refunded. Sometimes people refuse, sometimes they insist on the refund first, sometimes they stop communicating, and sometimes they return. I didnt realise it was a legal entitlement Callum, do you know the applicable law?
