App and site troubleshooting
Error messages – what they mean, and what to do.
If you run into an error on the site or app, we've got tips to help you.
1. Restart
Completely close the app (rather than just exiting), then re-open it.
2. Internet
A strong internet connection is important, to get the most out of the Trade Me app.
- Try switching between WiFi and mobile data, if available.
- Disable VPN, if you use one.
- Restart your modem/router, if using WiFi.
3. Reinstall
Re-install the app to start fresh.
1. Press and hold the app icon.
2. Select Remove app, then Delete app.
3. Re-download Trade Me from the App Store:

2. Select Remove app or Delete app.
3. Re-download Trade Me from Google Play:
Error code | What it means | Troubleshooting tips |
---|---|---|
400 | Bad request – usually an incorrect URL, or corrupt browsing data. |

404 | Not found – the page you're trying to get to doesn't exist. |
|
408 | Request timeout – it's taken too long to connect your device with our systems. |
|
500, 501, 502, 503, 504 | It's not you, it's us – we're having some issues at our end. We're automatically notified so we can get things fixed. |

Site maintenance
- From time to time (usually once a month), we need to perform scheduled maintenance.
- This always takes place between 1:00-2:00 AM.
- Listings scheduled to close during this time are extended by one hour.
