Manage multi-factor authentication
Learn how to set up MFA or 2FA for Trade Me.
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security to your Trade Me account. Learn about the different methods available.
About multi-factor authentication
On top of your password, MFA requires a second step to verify it is really you. This helps keep your account safe from unauthorised access.
To make sure your account is always protected, Email verification is automatically turned on for all Trade Me accounts and cannot be turned off. We will send a One Time Password to your registered email address when you log in.
Other available authentication methods
While email is your automatic security step, you can add other faster or more convenient ways to verify your account. Follow the links below for step-by-step setup instructions.
- Passkey: Unlock your account using your device's built-in security, like a fingerprint, face scan, or screen lock PIN.
- WhatsApp or text message: Receive a 6-digit code sent straight to your mobile phone.
- Authenticator app: Use a security app on your phone (like Google Authenticator or Authy) to generate a unique code.
Set up multiple methods and a default
We highly recommend setting up more than one authentication method. Having a backup option is really helpful just in case you get a new phone number, lose your device, or cannot access your authenticator app.
When you have multiple methods set up, you can choose which one you want to use as your primary way to log in.
To set a default method:
1. Log in to trademe.co.nz on your browser (Setting up MFA isn’t available in the iOS app or Android app).
2. Go to My Trade Me.
3. Under ‘Update my details’, select Manage multi-factor authentication.
4. Select the method you want as your default.
5. Select Set as default authentication method.
Stop multi-factor authentication
Enter code from your email
Sometimes, we may send a unique code to your registered email address to verify your identity. This request comes from Trade Me and is different from MFA. Learn more

2. Go to My Trade Me.
3. Under ‘Update my details’, select Manage multi-factor authentication.

5. Select Remove.
6. Select Continue to confirm the change.
