We're testing an AI tool that writes a first draft of your description from your photos and title. Using it is always optional. AI can make mistakes, so check your description before you list.
How AI descriptions work
We're trialling an AI tool that drafts your listing description. Here’s how it works:
- Add your photos and title, and AI drafts a description in one of two styles, casual or spec-focused.
- Use the draft, edit it, or skip it and write your own. It's up to you.
- Check your description is accurate before you list. AI can make mistakes, and you're responsible for what's in your listing.
Our AI tool is in beta, so for now we're only testing it with some members listing in Clothing & Fashion and Electronics. If you can't see it, you're not part of the test yet.
Do I have to use it?
No, using the AI tool to write your description is always optional, and it's your choice to use it when you list.
- Select Write my own to skip the AI tool and write your description yourself.
- You can switch to writing your own description at any point.
Writing your description with AI
To write a description with AI:
- Start a listing. AI descriptions are available for some members listing in Clothing & Fashion and Electronics.
- Add a title, category and photos.
- Select Draft AI description. It takes a few seconds to write your draft.
- Choose between casual and spec-focused. Casual reads like a friendly chat, and spec-focused sticks to details like size, model and features.
- Review the draft to edit anything that's not right or add in extra details.
Checking your AI draft
Our description tool can make mistakes, so check your description before you list. You're responsible for making sure everything in your listing is correct.
Pay extra attention to:
- Size, model and brand, as AI can misread a label or tag.
- Condition, such as wear, marks or damage, which can be hard to see in photos.
- Anything included with the item, like a box, charger or accessories.
AI only describes what it can see in your photos and what's in your title. It won't add prices or personal details. If it says something you can't back up, change it or take it out.
Always make sure your listing meets our listing policies.
When AI can’t write a description
Sometimes the AI tool can’t write a description. This can happen if your photos are blurry or don’t clearly show the item. The tool won’t guess at details it can’t see.
If this happens, you can write your own description to continue listing. You can use AI again on your next listing.
Tips for better photos
- Use good light, like near a window, and avoid harsh shadows.
- Show the whole item, plus close-ups from different angles.
- Include any labels, tags, model numbers or boxes.
- Keep the background plain so the item stands out.
Our tool isn’t available for all items
To keep listings accurate, safe and respectful, AI descriptions aren’t available for some items, like weapons, live animals, adult goods, health and medical products, child safety products and culturally significant items.
Giving feedback
After you list, we'll ask how the AI description went. Select either a thumbs up or thumbs down, then tell us more if it wasn't quite right. Every bit of feedback helps us make the tool better.
Your information
Your listing data is stored in accordance with our privacy policy and can be used to help improve the product.
