Verify your Ping payment
Find out what to do if we ask you to verify a Ping payment.
Before we complete your purchase, we may send you an email and ask you to verify your Ping payment.
Keep your verification code safe
We're aware of scammers pretending to be Trade Me or your bank to ask for your Ping verification code. This usually happens after they've used stolen credit card details to buy something on Trade Me. Lean more about how to spot and protect yourself from impersonation scams.
How to verify your Ping payment
Sometimes, before we complete your Ping purchase, we may send you an email that asks you to verify your Ping payment.
To verify your Ping payment:
- Go to your internet banking and find the transaction on your statement.
- Locate the four-character code on the transaction. For example, the code is EUD5 if your statement reads ‘Trademe EUD5 Ping 12’.
- Log in to Trade Me Help by selecting Log in from the top right corner.
- Start a chat with Tautoko bot, select Verify your Ping payment and send us your code. To start a chat, look for the chat icon in the bottom right corner of this page.
Your purchase is on hold until you verify the payment. If you didn't make this purchase, contact our Customer Experience team.
The $0.01 checking deposit
When you use a new bank account, we might deposit $0.01 to check that it works. This will disappear in a few days. You don't need to provide a code for this deposit unless we explicitly email you.
Where to find the code
You can find the code on your internet banking statement. Look up the transaction for the Ping purchase you need to verify. The code is four characters (numbers and letters) and appears between the words ‘Trademe’ and ‘Ping’.
Why we ask for payment verification
If our system suspects a Ping transaction was made by someone other than the cardholder, we’ll hold the purchase and ask for payment verification.
Asking for verification is how we check it’s actually you making the purchase, and not someone else. It’s one of the ways we keep Trade Me a safe place to buy and sell.
It’s unlikely we’ll ask you for verification multiple times, but always check your emails after a purchase for any notifications.
What happens while your purchase is on hold
We put the purchase on hold until you verify your payment.
When we ask for verification, we also contact the seller to let them know we’re checking the payment and not to send or hand over the items. After you verify the payment, we release the funds to the seller and let them know the trade can go ahead.
What happens if you don’t verify your Ping payment
If we don’t hear back from you within 72 hours, we’ll refund the payment to your card. We also let the seller know about our decision to refund the transaction and let them know they can relist the item.
