  • Richard commented,

We're not talking about sellers or buyers, both of those two things are choices the individual makes. We're talking about people getting into your account, one might just be thinking about a hacker getting in but it goes beyond that, think ex partner trying to hunt someone down, well a password alone isn't much of a defense especially if you know the person. Whether companies want to treat this information as sensitive is their choice but it is sensitive information.

I think we've had our answer, they're not interested in implemented the most standard of security measures. It makes their privacy policy moot, everyone should just expect their accounts to be compromised and reduce the amount of information available when it occurs. If you have payment information saved then remove that at the very least. I'm currently weighing up the costs and the only negative to deleting my account on here is losing the reputation score but that's not much of a loss compared to what an individual could do with address and purchase histories.

  • Richard commented,

Sidenote, your card information isn't the most sensitive information you have on this platform, that would be your address. If someone has that and has bad intent, your card information being stolen is the least of the concerns. Think physical attack, think domestic violence situations with ex partners. A password is simply not good enough. Sidenote sidenote, you can also request your utility companies IE power, internet etc put an additional password on your account that anyone has to quote before changes are made or information given, you should do this.

It's a little different to retail stores as you can physically go in to buy, their counterparts are amazon and ebay who both have it as does Aliexpress. That being said there are stores that do for example PBTech.

I wonder if it was made that if a scam was done that could have been prevented with 2FA that trade me themselves had to pay the damages for their failure to implement it whether they'd think it was important then.

  • Richard commented,

In terms of stuff, they wouldn't do it based upon one company i imagine but "NZ companies failing to introduce important security measure" then naming a lot of the big companies some mentioned above I could see making like a 3rd or 4th page of a newspaper

Mighty ape is looking into it, I've sent them a message as well. Amazon and Ebay both have it in terms of NZ companies, PB has it, Geekzone, IRD have it too. Yeah it should be opt in but also encouraged.

  • Richard commented,

Since trade me appear to have marked this as done and are no longer replying, I doubt they're reading this anymore

  • Richard commented,

Yeah "We handle everything in house" is not enough, you should be doing that on top of having things like 2FA. If you get someone's trade me account, you can see their physical address and then what? what could happen if a stalker or someone like that got a physical address, you can see where that goes. Trade me might not be the one committing the crime here but they're certainly not standing in the way as much as they could be / should be.
