NZ Classification stickers on DVDs etc.
AnsweredWhen listing a DVD, etc, you have to click the OK where it talks about it being illegal to list items that don’t have the NZ Classification sticker. What if, as is quite common, the item came sealed in cellophane with the sticker stuck on that, which gets discarded, or might be on a slip case which also might get discarded? If you know what the classification was, would it be acceptable to choose the classification from the drop-down list when making the listing? I have a listing at the moment that is cellophane sealed with the sticker on the cellophane, but if I had actually opened it and viewed it, discarding the cellophane, there would be no sticker. What then?

Kia Ora Graham,
If you type Ratings on DVDs in the search bar at the Top of the Community Help search, that Post has some very helpful information. - I can't link it here without going into Pending status which won't be cleared by TradeMe staff until Monday - Cheers.

I didn’t find anything there that answered my question.

Hi Graham. If the rating sticker is on the cellophane and I'm going to watch the film, I carefully cut around it leaving a cellophane edge and place it on the paper cover of the DVD inside the case (where they usually are). You can glue it if you wish so it does not get lost. Then if I decide to sell it I explain that it was on the plastic seal and describe where it is now, so the trade is honest about the rating.
The other answer for a lost rating or an 'unrated' dvd is the difficult one. Some people list them anyway, sometimes the auctions get pulled by trade me admin and the seller warned. If the rating sticker is not there there is simply no way to prove there was one.
DVDs were our business and if you have a large number of unrated DVDs the Film Labelling Body can assist with rating them. there is a cost however!.

Forgot to say choosing a rating from the drop down list when the dvd does not display a rating doesn't work. The idea is the photo of the dvd must also display the same rating on the cover.
Rating stickers are almost always on the paper cover. It is far more unusual for them to be on the case as cases can be damaged. Imports rated at a later time by our rating body sometimes have the plastic seal situation.

Kia Ora Graham,
The Links in that Post have now been updated,

Here's what to do if you don't see a New Zealand label:
- If you want to sell a DVD/Blu-ray you will need to get a label for it before listing it, unless the content of the DVD/Blu-ray comes under one of the exempt categories - find out what type of content is exempt. Remember that TV shows on DVD also need labels, not just movies.
- If your game has been restricted overseas (for example MA15+ or R18+ in Australia) you will need to get a New Zealand label before selling it. However, if your game is unrestricted (for example, G, PG or M in Australia) it can be sold without New Zealand labels.
