Jeff, in the Help page about items that don't sell it says they can be relisted within 45 days of expiring.
Items that don't sell – Help - Trade Me
It doesn't actually say they expire after that, and in fact you can relist them at any time in the future as long as you have a note of the listing or can find it. Relisting an expired auction is actually just creating a new one, but if you can find the old one you can at least grab the title and text to copy/paste in to a new listing. You will need to reload photos and shipping options too.
If you are in the habit of wanting to go back to old listings, you can tick the box in email preferences to get emailed a copy of listings you start in the last 24 hrs which will make it easier to find things later on.
As far as buying goes, there is nothing to say won items expire after 45 days. There is a note in the buying help page saying you only have 45 days since auction close to place feedback, but there is no explanation.
Perhaps it could be reworded to say, As items drop off your won items page after 45 days and can not easily be recovered, you can only place feedback on won items you can see ie that have closed within 45 days.
If you are using the old desktop version of Trademe like I do, it's a bit more obvious as the dropdown filters only go back to show items with 45 days and there is also a handy Items I can relist filter too.
There is also the same closed last 45 days in your won items on the old desktop site too.
