Seller wants me to pay upfront
AnsweredI recently purchased a vehicle, and the seller mentioned that it will be available for pick-up in two weeks. They've also requested upfront payment in email to confirm my genuine interest in buying the car.
I'd like to pay using PING to notify Trade Me about this deposit.
My question is: Does Trade Me have any policies in place to protect or process deposits in this situation?

Kia Ora Lei,
Is the Listing an Auction, Buy Now or classified?
You need to negotiate payment methods if they haven't stipulated their acceptable payment terms while the Listing is still running - Once the Listing is purchased you have entered a contract inclusive of those payment terms.
For Auctions TradeMe have Ping & Afterpay cover only up to 2,500. and if the claim report (Dispute Resolution) is filed within the first 30 days of the Listing closing - Beyond this & with Internet Banking & Cash payments TM Offer support in contacting your Seller with the first 45 days of the Listing closing However if your goods are Faulty TM will Support within a reasonable time frame.
- Do you know why the vehicle will not be ready for 2 wks?
- Did the Seller state the 2 wks before Pick up in the Listing Description Or Seller Comments?
- Have you checked out their Feedback status?

It's a Buy Now and Auction listing, and I opted for the Buy Now option.
The seller specified the pickup time but didn't mention the need for upfront payment in the Description. They only communicated this requirement via email. I requested the seller to list another item for the upfront payment.
As a result, we had a dispute, and the seller suggested calling off the trade, stating, "Let's call the trade off, mate. I don't have time. You should be very careful before you bid. Ask questions before you bid. I will have to flag you as well on Trade Me, and I have friends working for Trade Me. This is the second instance of a rogue trader."
Despite their feedback seeming okay, with 46 positive feedbacks out of 48, I'm encountered this issue.

Cheers Lei,
You can apologise for not requesting Ping payment prior to purchasing and if you really want the vehicle it's up to you if you continue with the terms as set out in the listing or if you are happy to let this one go. Communicating well with the Seller is the best you can do - The Seller has no reason to act intimidating, having friends who work for TradeMe has no impact on your trade or account.

Good advice S. Lei. You could always talk to Trade Me via Contact Us, Live Chat, real person option as to why the seller is using their 'contacts' at Trade Me to put you on the back foot. That's a bit off. Sounds like it might be BS.
Sorry you had this happen. Might have been a lucky escape.
