Will Trade Me ever fix their private messaging?
AnsweredThe Trade Me app has several features that you can't use on desktop like private messaging and the ability to sell and buy items with the "make offer" option.
If the "make offer" option is exclusive to the app it isn't really an issue but having a message system exclusive to the app is. There is absolutely no way to know if you have unread messages unless you have the app. Some sellers will become irritated thinking buyers are not responding to them. Its an easy way to set off a trade on the wrong foot.
Is this ever going to be addressed? Surely desktop users should be able to use the private messenger. Or it should be scrapped entirely if a large portion of people dont even know it exists, and it serves no purpose that email doesn't already.

Kia ora Gabriel, thanks for contributing. I'm pleased to let you know that we've just rolled out Make an offer for buyers to use on our new-look site. You can read here how to use it on listings where the seller has enabled it.
I will pass on your feedback about Messages. The trade will only be eligible if both the buyer and seller are using the Trade Me app.-1 -
Hi Lucy, in the past I have had an extremely messy trade as a buyer. The seller got incredibly irritated at me over email about my communication regarding my purchases. He was already a poor communicator as throughout all his enraged and frustrated messages, he never actually told me he had sent me messages through the app.
I found this out about a year later when I logged in and saw a bunch of messages from him and from other sellers.
I dont know what this sentence means: "The trade will only be eligible if both the buyer and seller are using the Trade Me app".
I was not using the app, I had it, but it was logged into my second account at the time but still, never in use. Everything I did was on desktop. Not sure what "eligible " means in that context.
It seems odd that this isn't already a known issue. I don't read theses message boards, but I assumed it would be something that has been mentioned before.
By the response above I'm really not sure if I conveyed the issue properly.0 -

Kia Ora Gabriel,
Sorry to read of your ordeal with that trade,
Yes! Sellers & Buyers using different means of contact between email & messaging and missing each other is a common issue which regularly comes up - you may be interested in Post: Turn off messages - TradeMe have been corresponding through that thread also. - All I can suggest in the interim is adding a footnote to your listings stating you don't use the messages feature - please contact via email for prompt response. - As the Buyer I would add this to the Delivery Instructions on the Payment page which goes to the Seller, they will be checking this section - Cheers.

I too find messaging frustrating for the same reasons. I have now started using the phone app (Android), so can see messages, but still can't send them. I'm trying to contact a buyer who hasn't paid the necessary courier costs for RD, but doesn't answer my emails- very frustrating- for goodness sake sort it out TM!
