How does the seller have my card details?
I purchased an item on trademe through a seller and paid with ping.
I did not save my credit card details to trademe when i added a credit card, to pay for this item.
The purchase went through, and the item was sent to me, was a great trade.
Then i went on to their website 2 months later and found they have saved my credit card details on their website, and i can make a purchase on their website.
I cannot remove the credit card details.
I believe they took the credit card details when i made the purchase on their trademe listings and saved them to their website.
Is that legal under trademe's terms and conditions for sellers to save any buyers credit card details?

Wow, that sounds very serious. I don't think a seller would have access to the credit card details of a buyer if you did pay with Ping, I believe the transaction is handled by Trade Me and nothing gets to the buyer except the payment.
You need to get in touch with Trade Me urgently and ask them to investigate what happened. Or maybe you could ask the seller how they got hold of your credit card details.

It is not possible for a seller to save your credit card details unless you gave them to them. If you paid by Ping, the seller never sees your card details, only Trademe. Are you sure you weren't redirected to the sellers website to complete the initial purchase (not by Ping) and it was there that you saved your card details, or perhaps your details have been saved by your bowser and prefilled again.

I used the trademe app for the purchase.
I paid by Ping, and added my credit card without saving it.
I also did a little test, just now, I went onto the trademe app, found the seller, and attempted to buy now one of his items.
Then i had to choose my payment method, which is Ping, the same as last time.
Then I was prompted to add a credit card payment method as my details were not saved in trademe.
then i added my credit card details without saving.
I did not get redirected to their website to enter my card details, it was all in the trademe app, payment card with ping as before.
Then I stopped right there, before confirming the purchase.
I know that i did not save my details, used the app, and confirmed the purchase through the app using the card i had loaded as the payment method via ping.
I have the transaction record for ping as well.
So as you can see, i was surprised that my credit card details were on the website of that trademe seller when i went to buy an item 2 months later after the original trademe purchase.
I also noticed that the trademe seller is a merchant on other new zealand selling sites, like themarket and bidbud.
I wonder if you purchase something from those sites, by credit card will you have your credit card details logged on the sellers website to purchase items there?

Hi Renee. I think you are getting confused with websites. Bidbud is not anything to do with the seller, it's like a front end website for Trademe. Sellers don't sign up to have listings on there, but buyers can sign up and buy things listed on Trademe, via bidbud.
Ping is ONLY available on the Trademe website and Trademe apps and not on any sellers websites or websites that interface with Trademe. You can only pay by Ping here on Trademe. The important thing is to look at the website url ie the bit that starts https://www.trademe.co.nz
How do you know your card details are on the sellers website? Have you bean to the sellers website to check?

Hey there Gary,
Thankyou for clarifying that, and I understand..
So I know that my card details are on the sellers website because:
I bought something off their website today, for the first time.
I did not have to enter my credit card details.
I just entered my email and delivery address.
They gave me an invoice number and are processing the payment. looks like it went through without me having to enter any of my credit card details.

Will be interesting to hear what the seller you bought from direct on their website says as to how they got your credit card details. Might pay to remove any saved cards from your browser too in the meantime in case you've accidentally saved them in your browser. Depending on your browser, for instructions just google remove saved card from browsernamehere eg chrome, Edge, Firefix etc.

Hi Renee, thanks for posting. We do not save your card details unless you ask us to by ticking the appropriate box. And we certainly would never pass that info on to any seller in the way that you've described.
If you'd like us to look into this in some more detail for you, please get in touch on email or Live Chat.

Hey Lucy, and everyone,
I have been in touch with the website support and they have confirmed that they do not have my credit card details.
I have checked the credit card and there is no payment from this website.
So Thankyou all for your support, but i have to admit that I was wrong and they did not take my credit card details and that they cannot.
I am also happy that this worked out :)
Renee
