Why has bidding suddenly gone so high - Autobid
AnsweredIn the past when I bid on an item my bid was hidden unless it was surpassed by a proceeding bidder. If the proceeding bidder raised the bid but did not beat my bid then I was only accountable for the new total which the proceeding bidder raised the auction to.
Ex:
Starting - 10.00
My bid - 20.00
Proceeding - 18.00
Auction still in my favor at $18.00
Now, if successful, the proceeding bid is displayed and the bidder accountable for their max bid.
Ex
Starting - 10.00
My bid - 20.00
Proceeding - 30.00
Proceeding Bidder now accountable for 30.00
Why has this changed?

Hi Sandi. Not 100% sure I understand you correctly here, but this is likely tied up in autobids. In your first example it is the standard way things play out for an auto-bid.
There are a couple of possibilities for your second example. Either the winning bidder at $30 has placed a direct bid for $30 (so not an autobid) Or if it was an autobid but someone else has also placed a bid at $30. So the bidding jumps to $30 even though the second bidder is not shown.
So without looking at them myself, I don't think anything has changed here.

Thanks, Callum
I didn't understand what auto-bid was for so I didn't opt for it and now the auction is priced at my max bid.
Now I know for future reference. =)

Kia Ora Sandi,
Yes! you have to ensure you switch the Auto-bid toggle tab on next to the amount you place as an auto-bid to ensure your Max isn't placed to begin with - you can double check this is switched on by the Tab at the bottom of the Pop up window which says normally 'Place bid' - it changes to 'Place Auto-bid'.
As this is a mistake you can ask the Seller in the Q&A section to remove your bid, explain you thought you were placing an auto-bid. - If your Seller doesn't respond you can ask TradeMe to do this for you though always ask the Seller first and allow them a couple of days, unless the Listing is due to close.
All the Best - Cheers.
